Well, these look like a couple of likely suspects! Murphy the Brumby and Adrianne.

For those who do not know his story, Murphy was originally from the Wide Bay–Burnett region. Unfortunately he lost his mother when he was a day old and when rescued was suffering tick paralysis and dehydration.

A week later Murphy was delivered to Split Rock Mountain. He was hand reared here on milk replacer, initially being fed eight times a day. Meanwhile, he was kept firmly in line by his adoptive mother, Lady, a wise old Stockhorse mare. She had reared many a foal before taking on Murphy and was not one to put up with any nonsense!

Murphy, or The Little D4 as he is also known, due to his propensity to push in where he is least wanted, is a real character, intelligent and tough as nails. All black, he has a distinctive 'Waler' head and a lovely crimp in his mane and tail.

Mozart regarding today's intruders with grave suspicion. He would appear to have been taking advantage of all that grass.

A sight to lift the spirits: Mt Campbell wreathed in mist this afternoon. Mt Campbell is situated immediately to the west of Split Rock Mountain.

Two days of light, steady rain has come as a welcome relief after weeks of unrelenting heat. This rain will also ensure we go into winter with an even better body of feed than expected.

Sometimes the weather gods smile upon us!

Summer and the living is easy...

While the grass may have dried off as summer has progressed, the horses are thriving.

In the foreground, Adrianne's fine Stock Horse mare, Lady and in the background, Emma's Thoroughbred and former champion show horse, Buddy.

Since this photo was taken earlier in the week, we have had a welcome 20 mm of rain, which has freshened the grass very nicely.

Good mates, Kelly and The Minstrel, indulging in the common equine behaviour of mutual grooming or allogrooming.

This behaviour is thought to strengthen social bonds and increase trust within a group. For horses, just like people, it is important to spend time with friends!

When allogrooming, horses use their upper lip as well as their teeth to rub and scratch and even gently nip, their mate. Usually the horses concentrate on the area around the withers, an area the horse cannot reach itself, but will also groom along the neck and further down the body.

Definitely a case of ‘You scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours!’

Getting up close and personal is the Arabian gelding, Shadow, aka SouthPark Eskapade. Owned by Shiralee, Shadow is a veteran of the endurance scene, with many a successful ride to his credit. He has not let this go to his head and he is a kind and well-mannered, albeit very alert, horse.

We were very happy to welcome Shadow to Split Rock Mountain this week.

Brax is out for the count!

There is just too much going on at Split Rock Mountain for an older Red Heeler. After a hectic day, Adrianne's Brax decided he definitely needed a good sleep.
