I tried something new for my workout this morning! ⁣

Before I got there I had all these thoughts and doubts racing through my head like:⁣
🔸What if I'm terrible? ⁣
🔸What if no-one talks to me? ⁣
🔸What if I fall on my face? ⁣

Of course, everyone was lovely and helpful and I didn't fall on my face 😅 ⁣

But it got me thinking about these limiting beliefs and how they can so easily stop us from doing the things we want to do. ⁣

Whether it's joining a gym or taking a new class, we talk ourselves out of it before we even begin because it's something new and our of our comfort zone. ⁣

Of course we aren't going to be the best at something the first time we do it! We're going to face challenges and make mistakes (and maybe fall on our face!) but that shouldn't stop us from trying. ⁣

Every single person doubts themselves from time to time. ⁣

But if we let our doubts stop us from taking action before we're the best at something, we'll never know what we can do and we'll miss out on a lot of experiences. ⁣

Somewhere along the way, the diet and fitness industries have made us think that getting healthy is synonymous with losing weight. ⁣

I frequently see ads for weight loss products and services (especially now that we’re heading into summer) that say ‘get healthy and lose weight’ as though this is always a package deal. There’s constant messages that we should be constantly pursuing weight loss, like that’s the only thing that matters. ⁣

But there are plenty of unhealthy ways to lose weight and unhealthy reasons to pursue weight loss.⁣

Healthy looks different on different bodies; it isn’t a certain size or body shape. ⁣

For some people, getting healthy means gaining weight. For others, it means backing off their training to let their body recover. Or it might be improving their relationship with food and eating more, not less. ⁣

We need to separate health and weight loss instead of seeing them as one in the same. You can have goals that don’t include weight loss. You can want to get healthy and not give a f**k about the number on the scale. Or if you want to reduce your body fat, find a way to do it in the healthiest, most sustainable way rather than buying into claims of a quick fix. ⁣

I'm not saying that getting these two donuts for less than $1 was the highlight of my trip to Mexico, buy I'm not *not* saying that either 🤫⁣

There's a running joke amongst my friends about how I eat - I'm always up for trying new burger places, dessert is my favourite meal, I plan holidays around places I want to eat, and I once made a two hour round trip just to buy some cookies 💁🏼‍♀️⁣

I love food and I love finding new and ridiculous foods to try. It's also something my husband and I love to do together (we went to Chicago a few years ago for the sole reason of eating deep dish pizza). ⁣

I used to be so stressed about food and trying to be smaller that I didn't enjoy going out and I felt so guilty for eating anything that was "junk" food that holidays were a smouldering cauldron of stress and self-loathing. ⁣

By learning to incorporate these foods into my diet in moderation, I realised that most of the time, I just wanted to taste something and that would be enough; I didn't have to eat the whole thing. I stopped having an all or nothing mentality.⁣

Those cookies I drove 2 hours for? They lasted close to two weeks because I ate a little bit at a time. These donuts? I had a few bites and left the rest. ⁣

Turns out I can have my cake and eat it too. ⁣

I was watching an episode of and in it, Raj says "if we're all going to die, why am I eating so much kale?"⁣

Now, he was talking about Earth being destroyed by an asteroid but it made me think - why do we spend so much time eating foods we don't like when we're just going to die anyway? Why are we willing to make ourselves miserable in the pursuit of some perverted idea of what health looks like for the short time we have here?⁣

Food should nourish your body and soul. So basically, eat your protein and veggies but also eat the damn cake.
For instance, I absolutely LOATHE kale, despite every "fitspo" model ever touting how glorious it is 🙄 So I'm not going to force myself to eat it. But brussels sprouts? I'll take them all! And edible cookie dough? You better believe I'm gonna go all crazy eyed and get that in me 🤪 ⁣

Because the earth could be destroyed by an asteroid tomorrow and I don't want to spend my time here just eating green leaves that taste like dirt and absolutely DO NOT taste better if you dehydrate them and sprinkle them with salt, FYI 😏 ⁣

Weight loss doesn't always have to be your goal. ⁣
You can’t lose weight, continuously, forever. ⁣

So after a period of calorie restriction and chasing that lower number on the scale and smaller body, then what? ⁣
Your life magically transforms? Unlikely. ⁣
You stop restricting for a while and gain all the weight back because you eat all the things you enjoy that you had cut out of your life? Probably. ⁣

And then the cycle starts again. ⁣

I was talking to a client recently who’d had dinner with her grandmother and, as they were eating, her grandmother commented that she was going to skip dessert so she wouldn’t gain weight.⁣

This broke my heart - this is a lady in her 80s who has spent her entire life focussed on a number on the scale, so much so that she wouldn’t eat dessert with her grandchildren.⁣

Do you really want to be in your 80s still skipping dessert? ⁣

Focus on eating food that nourishes your body and soul. ⁣

Find a form of exercise that you actually enjoy and makes you feel strong and confident. ⁣

Stop chasing a number on the scale and spend your energy on things that add value to your life. ⁣

You were made to do more with your life than lose weight and be small. ⁣

These strong women showed up and put in the work at our 6:30am session this morning 💪

Seeing the relationships that they develop with each other and the support they show each other every session is part of why I love doing semi-private training. That sense of community and support is so important and I have no doubt that it contributes to progress.

I'm so grateful I get to work with these women as they become stronger and bolder versions of themselves 💜
