HIROKAZU KANAZAWA — THE LEGEND WHO TURNED KARATE INTO A WAY OF LIFE
Hirokazu Kanazawa (1931–2019) was one of the most influential Shotokan karate masters in history. A direct student of both Gichin Funakoshi, the founder of Shotokan Karate, and Masatoshi Nakayama, Kanazawa dedicated his life to preserving and spreading traditional karate throughout the world.
Known for his extraordinary skill, discipline, and humility, Kanazawa became a champion of the first All Japan Karate Championships, winning despite competing with a serious hand injury. His victories and technical excellence quickly established him as one of the leading figures of modern karate.
In 1978, he founded the Shotokan Karate-Do International Federation (SKIF), creating a global organization dedicated to teaching karate not only as a fighting art but as a path of personal growth, respect, and harmony. Under his leadership, SKIF expanded to more than 100 countries, inspiring millions of practitioners worldwide.
Kanazawa believed that true karate is not measured by victories over others, but by mastery over oneself. His teachings emphasized strong basics, precise kata, practical kumite, and the development of character through lifelong training.
Today, Hirokazu Kanazawa's legacy lives on through his books, students, and the countless martial artists who continue to follow his philosophy:
> "Karate is a lifelong journey of self-improvement, discipline, and respect."
A warrior in spirit, a teacher by heart, and a legend forever remembered in the history of martial arts. 🥋🔥
