Run Report – 17 May 2026 – Blackdown Tableland

Amongst all the current uncertainties, it was a small but determined coastal band who gathered at Fig Tree Creek parking area before trotting up to Rockhampton to meet the newly returned traveller Jo Emmert and her friend Gab (have I got that right?) along with Gordon Kelsey. It was at this stage that the paucity of MGs became very apparent.

Pleasantries dispensed with, the group headed west on the Capricorn Highway before stopping, as usual, at Duaringa for morning tea and use of facilities. Plenty of morning tea was offered around but special mention must be made of Judy Hamilton’s cake.

Having phoned in that they would be late, it was at this point that John and Gail Newton arrived. The story was that while reversing out of the driveway, the handbrake on the E-type had locked on. John attempted to explain the cause of this inconvenience as the failure of an MG branded split pin. OK John.

Then it was on down the highway before spearing off and up the winding track to the Blackdown Tableland campsite. As might have been predicted, the barbeque didn’t work but most had brought a simpler cold lunch anyway. Gordon had brought his small BBQ which was more than adequate for its task. Everyone went for a stroll to the lookout point – some before lunch, some after.

Before departing for home, the group had a spirited discussion about arrangements for the June run to Myella Farmstay. The outcome of these discussions will be accurately rendered into the run sheet, probably followed by corrections.

Lucky number draw – more tickets were sold but, again, with such a small number of participants we haven’t completed a whole page.

“Events in the Middle East”, as they shall be referred to in future, are influencing everyday life around the globe in ways that I’m sure those more intimately involved ever imagined.

This includes the monthly runs of the Capricorn Chapter of the MG Car Club of Queensland. We were obliged to cancel the planned run to Many Peaks and Gladstone because of insufficient starters. Incidentally, it was lack of starters that (allegedly) cruelled the introduction of the P76. Just saying.

Which is how only 7 hardy souls congregated at the Gracemere Hotel for a feed and a shandy. The food was pronounced fine, with one unfortunate exception. Everyday cars were in evidence, with only two MGs and a BMW representing the sports genre.

The lucky number draw was not conducted, again because of low numbers.

Run Report – Rivendell Gardens & The Caves – 21 March 2026
By: Phil Henry
Photos by: Phil Henry

On the irregular day of Saturday, a posse of Chapter members gathered at the government buildings in Parkhurst to go and inspect the legendary Rivendell gardens, owned by Carol and Ross Mylrea, who also have A Man’s Toyshop. Four cars had come up from the coast for the jaunt.

Suffice to say the gardens, themed around frangipanis but with many other native and introduced species, are nothing less than spectacular. As we wandered around, Carol provided a running commentary with thoroughly comprehensive knowledge about everything we were looking at. Apart from the plants there were fountains, lakes, statues and peacocks. The attached photographs do not do credit to the size and scope of the place, which is on 25 acres (just over 10 hectares).

Following morning tea, Ross took us to look at his collection of old Yankee iron (Plymouths, de Sotos and so on) and petrol pumps. These treasures are under wraps for good reason, but I did grab a shot of an MGF, the sole representative of our marque.
Following an exhausting morning, the group repaired to the Caves Country Pub for lunch and refreshments, where we were joined by John Newton and grandson Kane, and Phil White and mate Greg Lacey.

In lieu of the usual tour fee, donations totalling $160 were raised which will go to the Rockhampton Animal Management Centre, reflecting the close relationship between the Carol and Ross Mylrea with the Centre for looking after the peacocks.
Thanks to Robbie and Gary Galloway and Glenis and Brian Russell for suggesting the venue and Gary Whight for organising.
The lucky number draws were won by Ewen Sutherland and Gary Whight’s sister Jennifer Adams.

We then repaired to our homes for LLDs: Little Lie Downs (thanks Meredith)!

Run Report – Byfield 15 February 2026

By: Phil Henry

One of these days, spring and summer will return, heralding fewer impediments to trouble-free monthly runs. Simultaneously, your humble correspondent will not need to mention the weather.
Suffice to say, February produced an onslaught of (mainly inaccurate) forecasts for rain, storms, plague, pestilence and who know what else. Based on these wildly misleading reports, an executive decision was taken to delete the two preliminary stops and instruct those who had signed up for the run to just head direct to the Byfield Store.

Future important changes to run details will be signposted with “UPDATE” or similar. For reasons at which you are free to guess.
In the end 11 fearless souls braved the quite delightful sun as they traversed the Byfield road. That’s a bit of poetic licence, there was some mist that a good road speed would have handled easily. Not so for Jo, Paul and Clare who encountered more challenging conditions in Rocky and turned back.

As always, the Byfield Store delivered coffees, sanggers, burgers and so on without delay and all participants were extremely happy with their choices.
In Gary Whight’s absence Paul Davey handled the lucky number draw, but with so few participants failed to fill the card, which has jackpotted.

In all, a short but successful run, we all look forward to March.

Run Report – 25th January 2026 - Mt Archer
By: Phil Henry
Photos by: Phil Henry

The day before Australia Day dawned clear over Capricornia. Just as well, after postponement for a storm that never materialised the previous week. That said, some observers noted a highly localised red mist descending at one stage during the formalities. Does anyone have any information?

Mysteries apart, it was a very good roll-up, as our first run of the year usually attracts. Thirty-one members in 19 cars in total, with all vehicles making it to the top of the mountain without serious incident (some bluey-green wet mist notwithstanding).
As members arrived, flasks of coffee and some nibbles appeared and talk got down to everyone catching up after the Christmas break. Appetisers then gave way to lunches, whether snags on the BBQ or other options.

The reinvigorated lucky chance game was explained and then delivered by Gary Whight. Paul Lynam was the inaugural winner. Paul had left by then but, unlike other forms of lucky number draws, the prize remains Paul’s for next time we see him. I’m sure we’ll all get used to the new game.

The temperature on Mt Archer was little different to that on the plain so, after plenty of chat and food, members gradually drifted homewards. A good start to our year. As mentioned the full calendar will be circulated once the committee has nailed down some last details.

Run Report – Christmas Party 5 December 2025
By: Phil Henry
Photos by: Phil Henry’s camera

We had a total of 39 members and partners at this year’s party, held at Yeppoon RSL. No significant incidents to report and everybody had a good time. Full kudos to the RSL and the caterers, The Cheeky Fork, for the venue and food.
Good to see our Emerald members. Bronwyn Fidler and Ray Smith join the Biloela crew, Clem and Jean Hill and Brian and Glenis Russell, make the trek to join the Rocky and coast members.
The unlucky recipient of the Broken MG award was Ian Hamilton, whose MGF self-detonated on Mt Archer in January. After being stripped of any useable parts it ended up as compacted trash – a terrible end for a great car but it was a unanimous five points. Runners-up were Martin Adamson, Rae Cowie and Wayne Bergan.
The awardee for the Janelle Thomasson Award for Club Member of the Year was Martin Adamson, compensating for his narrow loss in the Broken MG category. Martin and Narelle’s issues in trying to access their unit in Hervey Bay was the icing on the cake, so to speak, after several days of clutch problems on the Eight Beaches run. Described in the run report as “their equanimity in braving the new situation was exemplary”.
Judy Hamilton and Narelle Adamson also received gift hampers from Pampas and Sage.
The lucky door prize, another hamper, was won by Glenis Russell and the evening finished with a Secret Santa.

A reminder to all members to:
• submit ideas for monthly runs, including two-day weekend runs, e.g.
o Eungulla
o Mt Perry
o Gemfields
o Many Peaks/Gladstone
o Agnes Water
o Theodore/Isla Gorge
o Koorawatha
o Rookwood/Kabra (day trip)
o Myella Farmstay
• advise your views and suggestions on midweek impromptu runs
• let us know your thoughts on whether to continue the monthly dinners.

Can we please have any responses by 31 December for committee consideration before we start 2026 events. This will be the usual Mt Archer run on Sunday 18 January.

Thanks to all who helped in one way or another, especially in cleaning up at the end of the evening.

From all of us on the committee, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Run Report – Mt Morgan and Kabra 16 November 2025
By: Phil Henry

Apocalyptic weather warnings from BOM prompted the coordinator and deputy to consider options for the next day’s run to the Mt Morgan Big Dam and the Kabra Pub. After detailed discussions the verdict was “damn the torpedoes and full speed ahead”, and so most of those who had registered turned up at Yeppoon as scheduled. Gary Kunst, and Paul and Joanne Davey, were the determined optimists with hoods down, joined in Rocky by Ewen and Meredith Sutherland. Some hoods may then have gone up as an insurance policy

However, Mt Morgan was dry and cool and so coffees, snacks and cakes were soon being consumed and shared. With such a big group the chat was convivial which meant that the Horn of Compliance had to be deployed to allow Gary Whight to announce the winners of Gloria’s Poker Run and the Rusty Door.
Two matching hands of ace high straights meant it looked like a tie breaker would be needed for the cards, but as Kev and Yvonne Carr are not wine drinkers, they very kindly donated the bottle to John and Gail Newton. The Rusty Door was won by Jim Armstrong.

It was then time to announce the outcome of the democratic process to select next year’s committee. With nominations coming only from the existing committee, they were duly returned, to great acclamation. At this stage I would like to again thank Gordon, Gary Whight and Paul Davey for their work this year and thank all the members for their faith in us.
These formalities dispensed with, everyone decamped for the Kabra Pub. On the way a couple of us stopped to talk to a young bloke who was wrestling to start his 1963 Triumph Herald convertible. A quick word got him going and he may join our chapter. Earlier I had met a couple who are restoring an MG Midget; we may eventually add them to our group too.

Lunch at the Kabra is always good with excellent service too, but after a while the clouds started to descend as a warning to call it quits while we were ahead, and head for home. Sorry we had to leave Clem and Jean Hill and Jean’s sister Betty and brother-in-law Martin to finish their meals.

Advice about the Christmas Party on 5 December will be circulated soon.

Run Report – 19 October 2025 - Mulumbin
By: Phil Henry
Photos by: Phil Henry

A total of 23 members and spouses arrived at Emily Moore Park on Mulumbin Beach ready for a relaxed Bunnings BBQ style brunch. With clear directions on the simple run sheet, most arrived with ease. However not all - apparently.

Paul Davey had arrived early to set up his two barbecues, tables, chairs and the makings of the meals so by the time everyone had settled in, cooking was well under way. Paul’s hard work, complemented by Gordon Kelsey assisting, was well rewarded by the way the food was devoured and so before long the social aspect of the run was in full flow to catch up with each other’s doings since we had last gathered.

The group welcomed its newest member, Dennis Finch and his Nissan 300ZX and he was soon swapping automotive stories with the others. Good to see Bob and Wendy Schoevaart back amongst us after their travels and also George Ganter with his proper TF. With Trevor Andersen having also brought his TF it was almost like an old times MG meeting.

With only a limited number of other visitors to the area, the group had it pretty much to ourselves. Some mild interest was stirred by members of the (we assume) Classic Car Club pottering up and down the Scenic Highway in front of us.

Gloria’s Poker Run was won by Lyle Fielding with a hand that could only have been better if he’d printed the cards himself. Reminder to whoever delivers the poker run – more shuffling of cards is required. The Rusty Door lucky prize was won by Kev Carr.

After a very pleasant few hours, members started to say their farewells and drift off into the afternoon.

Run Report – Capricorn Caves 21 September 2025

One of the drawbacks of a committee whose families don’t include school-aged children is that you don’t know when the school holidays are. Our venue, the Capricorn Caves, did warn us it could be busy.

However, as it turned out there weren’t many visitors there on the day, so our little group was easily accommodated. That said, we were only a little group because many of our members were away, on family holidays we imagine. All this did not prevent some elementary early miscommunication on who was meeting and where.

The tour of the caves is always interesting and our guide, who’d only been there for two weeks, did an excellent job of explaining the natural wonders, both flora and fauna, while also being quite entertaining. Listening to a recording of a capella group Pentatonix doing Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah, in the Cathedral Cave, is always breathtaking and fortunately this time there was no unsolicited follow up rendition of Get Down and Get With It.

Those members who came but passed on the tour were still chatting away over their coffees as the tour group returned. We then all proceeded to the Caves Pub for a refreshing ale or two and the always excellent food. It was good to see Jo Emmert amongst us after some bouts of illness.

In the absence of Paul Davey and Gary Whight on holidays, there was no poker run or rusty door prize. So now we know who actually does the work.

Run Report – Eight Beaches Run: 4-10 August 2025
By: Phil Henry
Photos by: Phil Henry, Jim Armstrong, Ralph Kelsey, Gordon Kelsey

At last the day dawned on the long awaited Eight Beaches run. For those not aware, the Capricorn Chapter organises a longer run every two years. These have gone in all directions from Rockhampton, except to New Zealand. The Eight Beaches were: Rainbow; Tin Can Bay; Hervey Bay/Urangan; Woodgate; Bargara; Elliott Heads; Agnes Water; and 1770. Because of adverse weather and some mechanical/electrical incursions, only a select few managed all eight.

Seventeen people in nine cars departed from Rockhampton on Monday 4 August. No major incidents on the run down to the first overnight in Gayndah but some interesting notes. A bloke in Rocky pulled me up just as I was leaving Fantastic Furniture to tell me he had some MG trim bits for sale. I’ll try to get his details. As we passed through Thangool, we picked up four more travellers. After lunch in Monto we went to the RM Williams Centre in Eidsvold, where we got talking to a couple of RV drivers. The coincidence of two E-type Jags travelling in convoy, and two blokes whose RVs were equipped with composting toilets, was worth a conversation - apparently!
After that it was just a quick tootle down to Gayndah where twelve more members, from both “down south” and home, joined us. The obligatory happy hour soon got under way as those who didn’t know each other did so, while some renewed old acquaintances. Dinner was at the Grand Hotel, where the proprietor ran an exceptionally well-organised ship, and the first of a series of fantastic pub meals.

Day two of the run was from Gayndah to Tin Can Bay. A last-minute suggestion saw the group head to Goomeri for excellent coffee and local bakery delights. Managing to navigate through Gympie, we were met with an expansive, sumptuous BBQ lunch at Wayne Kirwan and Megan Perrett's property. So much food! A big thank you to both of them and their helpers for the immense effort it would have taken to cater for us all. Naturally, there was a display of members’ MGs and other models, not to mention the contents of Wayne’s workshop. Eventually we had to head off to Rainbow Beach and the Carlo Sand Blow (for some!). Then to Tin Can Bay's Sleepy Lagoon Motel for happy hour and shortly afterwards to the pub next door for dinner.

Wednesday was a slightly easier day with less driving. The day started early so we could see the dolphin feeding, a local highlight. Gary Whight and Beth Heraghty braved the winter waters to participate in the feeding and were so enthused they accepted the offer to do it a second time! Onward to Maryborough where most of the group took the opportunity to look around before another great feed, this time at the Carriers Arms.
The group then travelled on to Hervey Bay where Martin and Narelle Adamson had a major issue arise with their accommodation - they couldn’t get into their room. It took a few hours and much finagling before it got sorted.

For the Wednesday - second day - in Hervey Bay, we were guests of the MG Car Club of Qld - Wide Bay Chapter under the guidance of its coordinators Lyn Hayward and David Hall, ably supported by Chapter members. We had a very pleasant drive around the area including a visit to Bambooland, a restful and calming oasis.
Then to David and Lyn's place for a big Bunnings style sausage sizzle and a look at their extraordinary (there is no other word) MG museum. We were certainly privileged to have time here before it opens officially, as the range and curation are beyond commercial quality. As coordinators, David and Lyn suffer the same issues as with Capricorn, and probably all Chapters, in wrangling members to pay attention when being given instructions, so Capricorn bequeathed one of its bicycle style horns to them. Good luck! The only downer was the eventual complete failure of Martin Adamson's clutch, which had been losing fluid faster than he could top it up. After his and Narelle's massive hassles getting into their room in Hervey Bay, their equanimity in braving the new situation was exemplary. The car was RACQ’ed to us and, long story short, Martin and David subsequently sorted the problem after it turned out to be a split in the feeder pipe rather than the slave cylinder itself. Martin and Narelle’s costs were covered, and they made their own way home successfully. That said, five points have been allocated.
Happy hours were conducted on both days, first at the park over the road from one accommodation and then on the verandah of Ross and Shez Letten’s room. We also had two night’s most satisfactory meals at the Hervey Bay Boat

Friday’s run was from Urangan to Bargara. We had a pleasant if cool breakfast on the water’s edge at Toogum, then the group stopped at Woodgate on the way to Bundaberg where we had lunch at the Bundy Social club. More enormous meals, then on to the Bundaberg soft drink factory and outlet to taste a great variety of their flavours and get a six pack of samples to take home.

On the way to Bargara the run sheet had us stopping at the Hummock and then Elliott Heads. However, we had at last encountered the rain that the radar had been showing coming our way, so only four cars were at the Hummock – which is not a beach – and two cars at Elliott Heads, which is. In all the long runs that Capricorn has organised since 2016, this was the most rain we have ever encountered, so we’ve been doing pretty well.
After checking in at Bargara the group split up, having chosen a few different places for dinner. There was nowhere big enough and dry for happy hour, thus trashing another tradition.

Saturday’s departure to Agnes Water was delayed by Ross and Shez Letten discovering that their car – the global traveller Blue B – would not start, including through pushing and towing. Eventually Ross decided that RACQ was needed. They turned up but Ross decided to get it returned to Brisbane and hire a car to take them to Agnes Water.

The original run sheet had included a tour of another classic car display as well a visit to Tinaberries strawberry farm and lunch at Macadamias Australia. With the road to Tinaberries likely to be a red mud experience and the car display cancelled owing to serious health issues in the proprietor’s family, the planned lunch at Macadamias Australia was brought forward.

We were joined by David and Jenny Cook, coordinators, and Graeme Leacock and Marilyn Kerrigan from the Bundaberg Chapter for coffee and morning tea after they’d been able to rearrange their schedules. I overheard much useful technical information being shared, which is a big part of the value of club membership.

Once our Bundaberg compatriots had been farewelled, the afternoon run to Agnes Water was OK although through very wet conditions. Thanks to Brian Russell for confirming the shorter route was open.

Happy Hour was able to be reinstated for the last night in Agnes Water. Although the participant list totals 35, our numbers had dwindled to 13, after having risen and fallen continuously throughout the run. As some compensation, the final celebratory dinner at Sandcastles resort was nothing short of sensational. The necessary reflections and acknowledgements were made.
Sunday dawned bright and clear – of course. With formalities having been dispensed with the evening before, the group made their own arrangements for breakfast before hitting the highways for home.

So another Capricorn Chapter long run had concluded, probably more successfully than any such adventure has any right. Only two breakdowns, both of which could be sorted.
These adventures are great fun, I know we all had a good time. Thank you one and all.

Hi Everyone. I am posting this on behalf of Gordon, one of our members who does not have a FB account. If anyone can assist with his plea for help, please PM me (Phil White) and I can forward the information onto Gordon.

“I have acquired a year 2000 MGF that was destined for the wreckers. The main problem is its failed Hydragas suspension. I’m hoping someone may know of an MGF being wrecked that has an uprated suspension system. I’m happy to remove the bits myself and don’t mind if some travel is required.”
