Rugby Skills Academy is owned and operated by former international rugby player Onéhunga Mata'uiau.(Oné)
Onehunga is a skills and scrum specialist and teaches correct technique and basic skills, with a blend of Kiwi skills and Pacific Island flair. He developed these specialised coaching skills during his career as a professional rugby player, both 15s and Sevens, which saw him represent Samoa for
10 years. Onehunga's playing history includes the 1996 Ballymore international 10s, 1999 Rugby World Cup, as well as captaining and playing in the Hong Kong Sevens and the 1998 Kuala Lumpur Commonwealth Games. He represented Hawkes Bay in 1996 and 2001 for NZ NPC competitions and also Auckland and Bay of Plenty 1998 1999 ITM Cup. He was the youngest ever player that captain his country at the age of 20yrs. Onehunga operates in central Queensland, focusing on developing correct technique and basic skills for players aged nine years and over. Groups are kept small in order for Onehunga to give one-on-one coaching. Classes are developed to focus on each specific skill until these are mastered. Safety is number one, and this is an area that needs more time invested, from scrummaging through to tackling. Onehunga has achieved IRB Level 2 & L3 accreditation through the Auckland Rugby Union and now with Rugby Australia and World Rugby Educator has an extensive 20-year coaching career. He was coach-player for Waitemata Premier Rugby Football Union Club, one of the premier teams in Auckland. The club won the championship that year. Onehunga also coached the Manukau Police Rugby Team, Mt Roskill Grammar First XV and the Auckland Samoan Competition. The latter was made up of Samoans in the city, and Onehunga was voted coach of the year two years in a row. His coaching career has continued in central Queensland, with the Central Queensland Brahmans and the Central Queensland Regional Country for the Queensland Country Cup. As well as teaching at this open level, Onehunga is passionate about developing grassroots rugby and coaches school-aged teams in both union and league. He has been involved in the Bushrangers and Junior Gold. Through this, he has seen a need for the fundamental and technique. He has created three Levels of Programs for catering. Grassroots Programs
