Not to be dramatic but some of the advice I’ve seen this week from coaches with big followings has made my skin crawl!

Your form is important!
You may not feel it in the 5 minutes that you’re doing the movement, but repeatedly performing a movement incorrectly will absolutely increase your chance of injury later on down the track.

Take my bludging disc for example, that didn’t happen overnight, that was caused by many years of ignoring/playing down the small screams my body was making over a number of years.

Taking the time to learn correct form not only reduces your risk of injury but also allows you to get the absolute most out of your movement.

So yes, get out there and do the things! But take some time, make that muscle-mind connection, stop rushing your reps, if something doesn’t feel right, modify it! If you don’t know how, get yourself a coach. and above all else, LISTEN TO YOUR BODY!

As a coach my passion is quality movement, if you’re looking to improve the quality of your movement then get in touch today to book your meet and greet session 💪🏻

And coaches, do better, I know the in thing is to be controversial right now but you have a duty of care to encourage safe practices when you put information out on the internet.

I’m kinda embarrassed to admit
That I used to be a belt hater.
Anytime I saw someone using a belt for anything other than a 1RM I’d advise against it, telling them it would cause them to”rely on the belt.” 🤦🏽‍♀️(I was young and inexperienced okay!)
Now that I have spent 7 years in the industry and worked with hundreds of clients I’ve realised this:

The belt is a tool, not a crutch.
“Relying” on the belt is a load of garbage! A belt will not- fix your form. A belt will not- magically help you lift more weight. And belt will only make you lazy if you choose to let it.

The purpose of a belt is to optimise what you are already doing ie. correctly bracing the core and maintaining proper form. All things that you should already be able to do before even touching a barbell.

When used correctly a belt acts as an additional cue and support, gentle pressure around the trunk gives you a physical touch point to breathe into- kinda like when a coach comes and pokes you and says “squeeze here” which can help you to continue bracing correctly as you fatigue.
It can also help prevent unwanted curving through the spine during your movement.

I can happily say, I’m no longer a belt hater and when used correctly, a belt is a fantastic tool for supporting the optimisation of your weightlifting 🏋️‍♀️
