It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Don Mathieson, a cherished cricketer, coach, mentor, and club legend whose contribution to Victorian cricket spanned generations.
Born on 24 April 1931, Don lived an extraordinary 95 years, leaving an enduring legacy both on and off the cricket field. His cricket journey began with Prahran Cricket Club, where he played 11 seasons of District Cricket. Such was the impact of his service and achievements that the annual fixture between Prahran and Ringwood is contested for a cup that proudly bears his name, ensuring his contribution to the game will never be forgotten.
Don's talent earned him selection for Victoria, representing the state in two First-Class matches during the 1953/54 season.
In the 1962/63 season, Don joined Ringwood Cricket Club as Senior Coach during a pivotal period in the club's history. He arrived as the club was transitioning from the Eastern Suburban Cricket Association (ESCA) and preparing to establish itself within the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association (VSDCA) ranks from the 1966/67 season. Over the next twelve seasons, Don served Ringwood with distinction as both coach and player, appearing in 161 matches and helping shape the culture, standards, and success of the club.
His leadership and vision left Ringwood in a strong and enviable position as the club embarked on its inaugural season in Premier Cricket in 1974/75, a testament to the foundations he helped build.
Don's contribution to Ringwood Cricket Club is recognised through an extraordinary list of honours, including:
Legend Status in the Ringwood Cricket Club Hall of Fame
Selection in the Team of the Century (1901โ2000)
1st XI Captain
Seven-time 1st XI Batting Award winner
1st XI Bowling Award winner

These accolades tell only part of the story. Don will be remembered not only for his achievements, but also for his commitment to his teammates, the players he mentored, and the generations who benefited from his wisdom, leadership, and passion for cricket.
His name will forever be woven into the fabric of both Prahran and Ringwood Cricket Clubs, and his influence will continue to inspire players long into the future.
