Let’s hope this is the last trugo court ever demolished 😒

In very sad news for the sport of trugo, the former Preston Trugo Club courts are due to be bulldozed today. The demolition is to make way for level crossing removal works on the adjacent Mernda train line.

It's ironic – given trugo's railway worker origins – that the courts' demise comes at the hands of a railway infrastructure project.

Preston TC was formed in 1960 and for a time was one of the strongest clubs in the VTA. It won four VTA premierships between 1964–1972, as well as winning many other trophies in both mens and ladies trugo. The club wound up in the early 2000s.

A group of determined locals was trying to resurrect the club but unfortunately the obstacles were too great to overcome. Its spirit will live on.

DID YOU KNOW... This season will be the 80th anniversary of the Victorian Trugo Association premiership? πŸ†

This news clipping from the Melbourne Herald on 14 Nov 1940 mentions how the four founding clubs of the VTA – Yarraville, Footscray, Williamstown and Newport – would shortly start a pennant competition. That's the first recorded mention of what became the VTA competition.

We're excited that our 80th anniversary season looks set to hit-off in a few weeks' time, once our committee has finalised our COVID planning and drawn up a fixture.
