ACTIVE MOBILITY - why?
So you can pull a power pose like this one?

Obviously. Who doesn’t love a good power pose!

But there’s got to be more reasons than that, Coach?

You’d be right.

People think of mobility as how much range of motion you have, period. That’s not mobility. That’s flexibility. Like a seated forward fold hamstring stretch.

Mobility is the range you have active control over.

In the middle splits we are mainly testing abduction of the hip - the ability for me to bring my legs apart laterally, to the sides.

This requires length in the groin muscles (adductor complex) and hamstrings, but it also requires STRENGTH in the glutes, obliques, quads etc to pull the body into the position.

Hence why has got me working the active position here. If you can’t tell by the photo, this freaking hurts! My quads and ass are cramping.

Where do you wanna become more mobile? Let me see if I can help ya problem solve and figure out an exercise or two to try.

I’ve let myself go this past few years - I need to rebuild the good habits I know I need.

My client Stef came to me with the knowledge of what he needed, but found himself unable to take the action steps to build the life he wanted - he works at his laptop for endless hours in his pursuit as a writer and business person.

He felt he didn’t have, or wasn’t able to prioritise, the time to make the change he wanted. And was struggling to put the structure in place.

The biggest thing he was missing?

Accountability.

If information was all we needed to succeed, we would all have an injury free, powerful body with a six pack, a sharp mind and a fulfilled spirit.

The only thing standing between us and that is action.

Stef reached out to me.

He took action.

And in 8 weeks he has:
✅ Shifted over 5kg of fat
✅ Packed on muscle
✅ Got stronger in every lift
✅ Started to rehab an old shoulder injury
✅ Found rejuvenated energy for everything else in his life.

Be like Stef. Reach out if you need help. DM me “time for change” and I’ll take that as a sign you’re ready to get to it.

I want you to let me know, are you bringing your highest self to bear on 2022 yet?

Or are you still floundering around in the past, being an ostrich; burying your head in the sand and waiting for life to pass you by?

We’re into the second quarter of the year already. Today is day 105.

260 days are remaining in the year.

The days are long but the years are short. Life isn’t on pause! Don’t let 2022 pass you by!

Progress comes in many forms. What form is yours taking?

For Matti, he wanted to work physique change but has long struggled with certain areas of mobility and NEEDED guidance there (not his squat pattern, however, he’s got a natural/biological affinity for that one right there!)

We’ve started to delve into overhead squats with Matt and , in Matt’s case to challenge his thoracic mobility and overhead position.

Note the use of a 5kg plate as what I like to call a “guillotine” - makes it pretty hard to let your arms bend and cave when a weight is hanging there waiting to smack you in the head!!! 😂

We’ve used strength movements, rather than stretching, so he can continue to build muscle mass, but focused our exercise selection on improving mobility and boy has it worked.

How’s your programming serving you?

Continuous education - what are you learning at the moment? Leave a comment and let me know!

For me, I’m on a continuous quest to master my mind. Delving into Carl Jungs perspective on the male psyche and trying to learn why I do what I do, and why I think and act how I do. So much to learn, so little time… So I thought I’d multi task and soak up some sun rays.

22 degrees may be cold to an Aussie but it’s warm for me!

Stand tall. Stand proud. Be unashamedly yourself. Be willing to hold your head high and go after what you want with integrity and the desire for impact.

Because, as they say…
“Those who mind don’t matter. And those who matter don’t mind.”

Working towards something takes consistent, regular, sustained effort.

Especially if it sits in a category that could be considered a weakness.

I used to be stiff as hell. Now I’m inches from my middle split.

What are you working on at present?

SHOULD I CONSOLIDATE STRENGTHS OR LEAN INTO WEAKNESSES?

The timeless debate that will rage throughout the entirety of your fitness journey.

“I’m naturally good at this, it comes easy… Guess I should just stick with it, right? Milk every little bit of value I can out of it?“

I get asked this all the time by my clients.

They get into training, build some momentum, and gather an idea of what they like and don’t like.

And then when it comes time to change up their training phase, and I ask where they want to go next?

Most of them tell me more of the same!

And that’s cool. Sometimes I agree with them.

But not always.

As a coach, it’s my job to ensure a client gets both what they want and what they need.

And in many cases, the bottleneck to a client being able to progress in their fitness “like” or “strength” is an unrecognised weakness.

Mobility.
Stability.
THEN Strength.

That’s the building blocks of unlocking potential, at least in the gym.

Some clients voluntarily lean into their weaknesses. They acknowledge areas they struggle with, and recognise the value of leaning into them at times in their fitness journeys.

Fitness is like a dice. There’s many sides to it, all of them different, most of them complimentary.

Don’t be afraid to throw up a different number every now and then.
