Imagine you are in the middle of a marathon, and your gut decides to get upset with unpleasant IBS symptoms……not the best feeling and timing hey😬?
We all know that the FODMAP diet is an evidence-based dietary treatment for IBS, but does it have a role in sports nutrition too? (Spoiler alert: Yes!) A narrative review published this year looked at the role of FODMAPs in athletes and how the low FODMAP diet may play a role.
Although originally developed to reduce symptoms in individuals medically diagnosed with IBS, the low FODMAP diet can also potentially reduce the effects of gut symptoms in athletes with non-specific digestive symptoms, including those with IBS, and in turn improve their performance and mental wellbeing.
In most of the studies that looked at FODMAP and sports nutrition, short-term FODMAP restriction before and during exercises reduced symptom severity. However, there is still a lack of evidence investigating the FODMAP diet’s long-term effects on the health, nutrition, and gut microbiota of athletes, which are all important aspects to consider in the overall wellbeing in athletes (and in everyone else who follows the FODMAP diet too, of course!).
Given the FODMAP diet’s possible impact on nutritional intake and gut microbiota in the long-term, an individualised FODMAP approach is essential for athletes who follow the diet, to help minimise dietary restrictions and optimise the gut microbiota, while achieving symptom control, improved performance and sustained mental wellbeing. This is an area of sports and gut nutrition research that we all look forward to hearing more about in the future.
