Moriarty Sports Person of the Month for June is Merle Wortel. Proudly Sponsored by The Canungra Times.
This month, we are proud to celebrate Merle Wortel as Moriarty Sports Person of the Month. Merle has been a dedicated lawn bowls player for many years, demonstrating passion, skill, and unwavering enthusiasm.
Originally a member of Boonah Bowls Club, Merle’s commitment to the sport continued after the club’s closure several years ago, when she and fellow players transferred to Canungra. Her love for lawn bowls has remained steadfast, and her achievements this year are truly inspiring.
Most notably, Merle achieved an impressive milestone by winning this year's Club Championship in the Ladies' Singles event — at the age of 88, and just a month shy of her 89th birthday in October! Her energy and enthusiasm on the greens are contagious, often putting younger players to shame.
Although she was unable to represent Canungra at the District Champion of Club Championships at Club Robina due to a health issue, Merle was more than willing to give it a go, embodying the true spirit of sport.
Everyone in the club was delighted to see Merle claim this year's title. Her dedication and positive attitude serve as an inspiration to us all.
