Queanbeyan Whites

Queanbeyan Whites Rugby Union Club The Queanbeyan Whites were established in 1954, joining the ACTRU Competition in 1955. Contact for bookings and stay tuned for up coming events.

The Mighty Whites, as they are also known, went on to first win the ACTRU Premiership in 1959 and then went on to a run of three successive premierships from 1981-1983. The Whites broke a 24 year premiership drought by winning the ACTRU Premier Division John I Dent Cup Grand Final in 2007 in which they defeated the Gungahlin Eagles 33-12, a match they never looked like losing. The September 1 Gran

d Final win was made all the more sweeter by the Queanbeyan Colts side, who also won their grand final on the day, beating the Tuggeranong Vikings. The following 2008 season proved to be arguably the finest in Whites history with First, Second and the Colts grades finishing the season as minor premiers. The club was also awarded the honour of Champion Club and Club Champions for the first time ever. However the icing on the cake came for the Mighty Whites at Viking Park on grand final day. Three premierships were delivered in style with First Grade, Second Grade and Colts proving that their minor premierships were no fluke. After losing the heartbreak of losing a close final to Tuggeranong in 2009 the Whites first grade side got their revenge in 2010 in another close final this time winning 30-28. The colts team also bounced back from a disappointing 2009 to take the title in 2010 and then followed it up in 2011. The whites now have a new home which features a modern function room named "The Whitehouse". Overlooking the picturesque Campese Oval and boasting new bar, catering and entertainment facilities The Whitehouse is ideal for all occasions.

One of our own, Arley Moore, is currently facing an incredibly tough fight after suffering a serious leg injury while playing the game he loves.

What started as a severe tibia and fibula fracture has since become far more serious, with Arley developing a significant infection that has required multiple surgeries. He now faces a long and difficult road ahead as doctors work to save his leg and help him begin the journey towards recovery.

Arley is only 24 years old and has shown enormous courage and strength through an incredibly challenging time.

A GoFundMe has been set up to help Arley and his family with the growing costs of treatment, rehabilitation, travel, time away from work and ongoing recovery.

As a club, we know how strong the rugby community can be when someone needs support. We encourage anyone who is in a position to help to please consider donating. Every contribution, no matter the size, will make a difference.

If you are unable to donate, sharing the fundraiser will also go a long way in helping Arley and his family.

Let’s get around Arley and show him the support of the Whites family.

Hitchcock Shield where it belongs

By Phill Hawke

Queanbeyan took possession of the Bob Hitchcock Territory Shield when the defeated University Owls in round 8, 58-26.
The shield is held by the home team until beaten with the end of season winner the holder after the final round of the John I. Dent Cup.

In 2018, the first shield game was between foundation clubs Easts and Uni-North. Easts became the holder after beating Uni 22-20, but they lost it to Queanbeyan when the Whites won 29-20. Queanbeyan has not won the end of season ownership.

Whites’ stalwart Bob Hitchcock is recognised by the shield competition which is based on the New Zealand Ranfurly Shield.

Hitchcock came to Queanbeyan as a schoolteacher at Queanbeyan West. He played for the Whites and then coached the club before moving into the representative field. Bob was a life member of the Queanbeyan club (2008) and the ACT Brumbies. Awarded an OAM and named ACT Coach of the Year on two occasions, Bob done it all.

His representative coaching included the ACT, Australian Under 21s, Emerging Wallabies and the Australian Women’s Wallaroos and Women’s Sevens.

Rarely does a photo capture the nature of the person. This one does, it shows his warm personality, a strength of character, his sense of humour ands honesty.

Bob died at the age of 76 leaving behind his rugby community and family.
