The first Australian Tractor Pull was held at the Elmore Field Days (Victoria) in 1976. The following year saw Tractor Pulling begin in the Victorian rural town of Quambatook. It has developed over the years into a highly competitive and technical sport, where the difference between first and last place may be as small as one or two metres. Often the top tractors are separated by mere centimetres.

The Australian Tractor Pullers Association (ATPA) is a non-profit organisation that governs Tractor Pulling in Australia. Our events (Tractor Pulls) are held in conjunction with a promoter. This is often a local school, sporting, service or community club (for example; Apex, Rotary, Lions, Netball, Cricket, Football) who use the event as a fundraiser. Tractor Pulls are held in locations throughout Australia, predominantly in Victoria, South Australia and New South Wales. In the west the Western Australian Tractor Pullers Association (WATPA) runs events and is affiliated with the ATPA. The ATPA is focused on actively promoting this spectacular sport and working with communities to not only establish a unique annual event, but more importantly to assist communities financially through the influx of spectators, sponsors and promotion. The tractors are divided into classes and comply with either "Limited" or "Open" rules. The classes are Open Modified, Super Modified, Limited Modified, Open Mini Modified, Mini Modified, Pro Stock (diesel) and Two Wheel Drive Trucks. The distinction between classes is determined by the overall maximum weight, engine modifications, fuels and physical size. Competition is open to both women and men, the only restriction being that competitors must at least hold a current Learner Driver’s Permit. It sometimes comes down to members of the same family competing for the trophies. The Junior Modified Pulling Association conducts an "introductory" class for 8- to 16-year-olds to develop driving, mechanical and competitive skills. The Modified Mowers pull their own smaller version of the big sled. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tractor_pulling)

CAPTION THIS PHOTO EXPLANATION

If you missed it, go back to our Wednesday night post.

This was the moment it sunk in.

Captured from the 100 metre mark, this was the split second Sledgehammer’s driver, Gene, realised he had just been beaten by Kryptonite in the John Parker Memorial Perpetual event.

It is the look of a bloke replaying the run in his head, knowing how close it was, and wondering what words his co-driver might have for him when he gets back to the pits.

Disappointment, pressure, rivalry and a fair bit of Quamby humour, all caught under the lights.

That’s tractor pulling.

THE JOHN PARKER MEMORIAL RESULTS

The John Parker Memorial is another of Quambatook’s perpetual trophy events. This one is held in honour of a man whose contribution to tractor pulling at Quambatook and across Australia has left a lasting mark on the sport.

John Parker was instrumental in helping introduce tractor pulling to Quambatook, and his legacy still lives on every time the sled drops at the Home of Tractor Pulling.

Since the introduction of this event in 2008, Kryptonite has now claimed the John Parker Memorial for the seventh time, once again with Leslie Lawrance behind the wheel taking the trophy.

Congratulations to Leslie Lawrance and the Kryptonite team on taking out one of Quambatook’s most significant memorial events.

RED STEER AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONSHIP RESULTS

This is not just another class win. The Red Steer Australian Championship is one of Quambatook’s perpetual trophy events, named after Red Steer, which is widely recognised as one of the first modified tractors in Australia. Red Steer competed at the first organised Australian tractor pull at Elmore in 1976, and by 1977 Quambatook was already building the legacy that still continues today.

Since the trophy was introduced in 1977, names like Mallee Muncha, Double Trouble, Outlaw Too and Supamann have all left their mark on Red Steer history multiple times. This year, Rumpus gets its name on the trophy for a second time, this time with Robbie Ward behind the wheel.

Congratulations to Robbie Ward and the Rumpus team on taking out one of Quambatook’s most iconic trophies.

OPEN MODIFIED 5.10 TONNE RESULTS

Closing out the Open Modified results with the 5.10 tonne class.

With Andrew behind the wheel for the final event, Sledgehammer laid down 104 metres and made sure the Open Modifieds went out in style. Black smoke, red pipes and a full pull to top it all off.

One machine, three weight classes, and no shortage of presence. Sledgehammer made its mark all day and capped off the class with authority.

Congratulations to the team behind Sledgehammer.

OPEN MODIFIED 4.20 TONNE RESULTS

Next up, the Open Modified 4.20 tonne class.

Sledgehammer backed it up again in a big way, this time with Gene behind the wheel and stretching the distance out to 120.24 metres. With the smoke in the air and that Scania V8 doing the talking, this one was hard to miss.

Congratulations to the team behind Sledgehammer on another class win.
