Dragons Abreast Sydney Dragons Abreast Sydney knows that improving your mental and physical wellbeing is important.

We invite you to jump on board with like minded souls and give this amazing sport of Dragon Boating a go! We are breast cancer survivors of various ages from a diverse range of backgrounds, athletic abilities and interests. High on our list of priorities is having fun, trying new things, meeting interesting people and being involved in a challenging physical activity whilst promoting breast cancer

awareness. If you want to:

Then Dragon Boating is the sport for YOU!!! We invite all breast cancer survivors and supporters to come and experience the magic that is part of our unique team - not necessarily as a paddler; there are many tasks that we welcome assistance with. Our Come and Try sessions will be held on the second Saturday of the month. Next session is on Saturday 10 September 2022

What did we do when the first day of racing was cancelled? đŸ€·â€â™€ïž
Explored more of the Savoie area, of course!

Some of the Dragons Abreast Sydney team took the train to Annecy in Haute-Savoie. Known as the "Venice of the Alps”, this charming old town is absolute magic.
We spent the day wandering through historic alleyways, crossing flower lined canal bridges, and admiring the crystal clear turquoise water of Lake Annecy framed by massive mountains. We enjoyed seeing the markets, eating fondue, crepes and ice cream.
We also tried to dodge the storms and heavy rain, which cleared up quickly to let the sun come out.

Annecy really feels like a storybook come to life đŸ„°

During our downtime from the IBCPC festival schedule, DAS and Friends were able to explore and learn more about the local area of Aix-les-Bains and Lake Bourget by going on a cruise to Hautecombe Abbey

Hautecombe Abbey is a former Cistercian monastery, later a Benedictine monastery, perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking Lake Bourget.
For nine centuries, generations of clerics have lived a life of prayer and work within this abbey.
It was also the burial place of the members of the House of Savoy.

In 1992, when the Benedictine monks left for the Abbey of Notre-Dame de Ganagobie, the Archbishop of ChambĂ©ry invited the Chemin Neuf Community to continue the abbey’s vocation of prayer and hospitality while preserving this architectural treasure.
We were lucky enough to meet some young people who are part of this community.

Race Day 2 at the IBCPC Participatory Dragon Boat Festival
Originally these races were planned for the Friday as 500m heats then final however due to poor weather were moved to Sunday in a 1000m turns format.
DAS doesn’t usually race this format but we were all excited to get back in the water for another race.
We paddled hard knowing this was our last race and we’re very pleased with our time, many of us quite enjoyed this race format.
When we got off the boat a lovely surprise was waiting with paddlers from other clubs lining the exit to high 5 and congratulate each other.
This event is about so much more than the racing, it’s about the community and support of every paddler, no matter what team or country, we have all received a Breast Cancer diagnosis and are living life to its fullest 💗

We were in lane 6 to the right of the screen wearing white hats with a pink brim.

DAS was in final number 13 which meant we were about half way through the field.
Our Final race had all the drama, another boat wanted to start in our lane, they did get out of the way ready for the start however half way through veered into our lane, Bernie our sweep managed to swerve us around them and we kept on paddling, finishing a strong 2nd đŸ’Ș
We were so focused in our boat we didn’t notice until we finished that another boat had unfortunately capsized early in the race, all paddlers were okay.

Not all the drama was caught on camera.

Day 1 Races
After a days delay due to weather DAS was on the water for the first 200m heat of the day which was a great race, we felt strong and came away with a good time ready for heat 2.
Unfortunately there was a delay due to wind which meant the 2nd heats were cancelled and straight to finals.
