What do Mount Everest and Cabarita Park have in common?...

Well, 29 May is Mount Everest Day, and today the Sydney Nepalese community was celebrating the anniversary at Cabarita Park just as Saturday Orienteering Series was getting into full swing.

It was a wonderful sharing of space in this beautiful harbourside location on a perfect Sydney autumn day — and a nice reminder of the recent Bold Horizons journey to Everest Base Camp.

Thanks to everyone who joined us today. Next week we have a break and then we’re off to Meadowbank the week after!

An entertaining Ultra Sprint event at Boronia Park, Epping yesterday for the Saturday Orienteering Series! Bold Horizons embraced the challenge and complexity of organising this special format, and it was fantastic to see everything come together so smoothly.

The numbers told the story:
• 500 trees on the new map
• 5 different ultra sprint courses
• 130 competitors
• 558 downloads
• A fast-paced 2.5-hour event window

There was a real buzz around the finish area as competitors compared times, discussed missed controls, and laughed about accidentally punching a few “bonus” controls along the way!

A huge thank you to Janet Morris and Barry Hanlon for identifying the area, and to Duncan Currie for his incredible work preparing the map — including the monumental task of placing all 500 trees on it.

It was also great to see the Peels and Newtons travel directly from Newcastle by train to Epping Station, conveniently close to the assembly area. Even Greg managed to arrive straight from the international airport by train in time to take part in the event!

All in all, it was a hugely entertaining day showcasing the excitement, intensity, and fun of this short-form orienteering format.

Saturday O Series next week is at Cabarita. See you there!!

Happy Mothers Day!

It was great to see lots of Mums at Centennial Park yesterday either trying orienteering for the first time or returning for their regular run at Saturday Orienteering Series. It was really special to see the juniors write a message of appreciation to their Mums on the white board before they ran!

All in all, a spectacular day of Autumn sunshine at Centennial Park with a fantastic morning of fun, fitness and navigation. Thanks to everyone who came along and helped create such a positive atmosphere — and a special Happy Mother’s Day to all the amazing mums in our orienteering community!

We are presently on a break from Saturday Orienteering Series. During the hiatus, we are living the adventure — trekking ever higher on the journey toward Everest Base Camp. Every day is a chance to explore, discover and grow as we wind through breathtaking mountain landscapes, vibrant villages and ancient trails steeped in history.

Around each corner is something new: a view that stops you in your tracks, a cultural moment that sparks curiosity, or a personal breakthrough that reminds us why we take on these journeys.

This trek is as much about challenge as it is about discovery. The altitude, long days and changing conditions are testing us, but it’s in these moments that resilience shines through. With every step closer to Everest Base Camp, there’s a growing sense of achievement. Not just in the distance covered, but in the strength, confidence and perspective being built along the way. This is what Bold Horizons is all about — chasing dreams, embracing challenge and creating experiences that stay.

And dreams, challenges and experiences can be embraced at Saturday O Series which returns at sea level on 2 May 2026 at Sydney Park...

First rate student leadership and personal development was a delight to witness. Seriously impressive. The Bold Horizons crew were helping out with navigation skill development across the week long camp and students excelled. The Knox Ravenswood Cadet AFX is an amazing camp and the students were putting our motto of Explore ~ Develop ~ Grow into action every day. No phones, no comfy beds and home cooked meals just daily challenges, shared experiences plus the building of deep friendships, resilience and self confidence with a bucket load of fun thrown in.
