History: Princes Gardens (Prahran Park Basketball Court).

In November 1906, Prahran Council purchased a narrow strip of land east of the Independent Church, previously used by Furneaux and Goodbody as a timber yard and saw mill. The following year a memorial fountain was erected to honour Dr John K. Ramsey, known for his compassion towards the poor, who lived at 244 Malvern Road from 1880 until his death in 1906.

Originally called Malvern Road Gardens, in 1921 it was renamed Princes Gardens to commemorate the visit of Edward, Prince of Wales, the year before. Businessman Dafydd Lewis, co-founder of the Love & Lewis department store in Chapel Street, donated land to extend the Gardens in 1923, and a sundial, using stones from St Paulโ€™s Cathedral, Melbourne, was later installed in his honour. Council purchased additional land for a childrenโ€™s playground and wading pool, opened by Mayor Cr John C. Pickford in December 1924, providing the ornamental gates at the Malvern Road entrance to the Gardens at the same time. The gates and fence, another short section of which stands at the Little Chapel Street entrance, were purchased by Council when land surrounding Illawarra (now St Catherineโ€™s School), was subdivided earlier that year.

Prahran Swimming Pool replaced the wading pool and opened in 1964. The Independent Church, built in 1859 and now heritage registered, was purchased by Council in the early 1990s and transformed into Chapel Off Chapel. In 1997 Council created the Stained Glass Garden to remember those who died as a result of serving in the Vietnam War.
