Port Sorell have officially claimed the Tier 1 Cup securing the title in what has been a memorable season 🏆🏆
When we arrived at Ross today for our game against the Thylacinians, we were met with overcast skies and a noticeable dew all over the ground. The ground once again looked a picture.
After winning the toss, Spencer elected to bat first looking to take advantage of the early conditions. To be honest, we weren’t great at the start (maybe last game blues) but we kept things tight enough and never allowed the innings to get away from us. Andy Marshall (1-23 off 😎 and Jase Summers ( 1-12 off 5) started us off. Highlights were Kap showed some brilliance to complete a direct hit and Glenn being rebranded “Mario” for his in-field fashion statement. Simon 1-21 off 4, Kap 0-19 off 5 and Gibbo 0-18 off 7 for us to drinks with the score 4-89.
Despite some resistance through the middle order, the Thylacinians were eventually restricted to 133. With Troy leading the way with 3-10 off 4 overs. Geoff with some magnificent turn 2-10 off 6, Rohan getting the ball to jump about 1-4 off 2.3.
At the end of the innings the Thylacinians were bowled out in the 44 over for 133.

Chasing 134, we made a fast start however lost our first wicket in the 8th over with the score on 48 with Captain Sallese 25 and Kap 26 at the top of the order. Knowing we had plenty of batters in the shed, the innings was then anchored by Simon, who plundered 41 off 31 balls and Jason (25 no) guiding Port Sorell toward the target.

We eventually reached the target five wickets down in the 24th over, sealing the win and confirming their position as Tier 1 Cup champions.
Special mention to Glenn (Mario) Hoey for having “Mario” actually written into the score book 😂😂🏏 and Jason is the holder of “Ducky” for the off season.

The victory represents a significant milestone for the Port Sorell club, claiming the Tier 1 title for the first time. It is a fitting reward for a strong and consistent season.

Just as importantly, the match highlighted the spirit and quality of Masters Cricket Tasmania, with another excellent day of cricket played in great conditions and great company.
A big thankyou to everyone who supported us (behind the scenes) throughout the season and to all those who put their hand up to play. It’s been a great season and please remember to keep an eye out for upcoming training dates during the winter season.

Port Sorell have claimed the Tier 1 Cup in the Masters Cricket Tasmania competition, marking a memorable milestone as the club becomes first-time winners of the Tier 1 title.

Played at Ross, the match was a fantastic showcase of Masters cricket. Batting first, Port Sorell compiled a strong total of 257 for 5, highlighted by excellent contributions throughout the order, with 5 retirees. Paul Smith led the way with a well-made 46, while Claude Orlando added 43 and Nick Sallese 41. Peter Georgiades also played an important hand with 36 with John Gibson chipping in with 20 off his 40 balls, helping to set a challenging target,

In reply, LOXI lost 2 quick wickets in the first two overs, however Brian Pigden 55 no and Ivan Dunuwille (41) set in resurrecting the innings. Port Sorell’s bowling and fielding kept them slightly in front at drinks (22nd) with LOXI 4-88. Mick Hortle (19 no) and Garry Collins (20) fought hard but were eventually dismissed for 163,
All bowlers bowled well (apart from the Captain) and the wickets were spread around.
Importantly, this win represents Port Sorell’s first Tier 1 Cup triumph, a terrific achievement for the club and a fitting reward for a strong season, with one game to go.

A big thank you must go to everyone who has played with us this season.
We have grown over the last three years with 37 players in our group. Our roster this year went from approx 5 games last season to 11 games ( including the touring Qld team, the Old Gits) this season The continued support and participation of players is what keeps Masters Cricket thriving.

Tier 1 matches are particularly important for the development and strength of Masters Cricket within Tasmania, while still in its infancy it is providing us an opportunity to play under “National” rules and conditions while still maintaining the spirit and camaraderie that makes the format so enjoyable.

Special thanks should also go to the club contacts from all participating teams who helped organise fixtures and ensure the Tier 1 competition was able to be established and run successfully this season.

Recognition is also due to President Claude Orlando and Secretary Gary Collins for their ongoing work behind the scenes in supporting Masters Cricket Tasmania and helping the competition continue to grow.

Finally, a mention must go once again to the Ross ground, with the pitch once again presented in fantastic condition and providing an excellent surface for the game.
Looking forward to our last game against the Thylacinians in Ross this coming Sunday.

A ripper of a game was held today at Port Sorell with the Home team taking on the travelling team of Marrawah. The threatening rain that was forecast didn’t which led to a great game today. Port Sorell won the toss and elected to bat first and were off to a good start with both Rohan M ( 33no) and Captain Nick S (27) all retiring after 40 balls, along with Kap (29) going nicely and getting to our drinks break at 1 for 94 off our 20 overs. Unfortunately, after the break, as folklore has it, we lost a wicket (Hammer 14) in the first over after drinks. Everyone chipped in and made starts without really going on with it, highlight probably being Georgie (12) starting the barbecue early with Jason (0) however the consolation is Jason now is the proud owner of the duck hat. Gibbo once again finish not out on 22, I think he hasn’t been dismissed this season so odds on to open the batting next week. We finished our 40 overs at 9 for 181. I thought at the time we were probably a good 20 to 40 run short of what we should have after such a good start. After sitting down to a very nice spread of food (Sorry, forgot to take photos, but thankyou to everyone who chipped in) We started the second half with Andy Marshall (0-21 off 5) and Jason Summers ( 1-20 off 6) Gibbo (2-17 off 6) , Kap (1-27 off 6) and Georgie ( 2-30 off 6) and Troy ( 0-11 off 4) all played their part to get us to drinks with the opposition at 3for 77. Still anyone’s game but I thought we were in front of the game. Unfortunately, a couple of missed catching and fielding opportunities at crucial times let the opposition team back into the game. So it basically came down to the last ball with the score tied, unfortunately or fortunately (depending where you sit) they were good enough to scamper a quick single to win the game. It was a great game that everyone thoroughly enjoyed, played again in fantastic spirits with everyone enjoying each other’s company and finished off with a few beers and a barbecue ( Thaks Dino 👏🍷)
So next week, we are off back for our second last tier one game against Loxi at Ross.
Looking forward to it and hopefully cementing our spot at the top of the tier one group.

This Sunday saw us play host to West Tamer at Shark park. The sun was beaming down and Capt Sallese won the toss and elected to bat. We opened with Kap (25 off 30) and Rohan (39 off 30) who got us off to a great start. Waz in at 3 and he made a handy 23. We welcomed new player Mathew (Hammer) Hamilton to the team and our middle order kept the run rate up. Sad (35 off 29) Gibbo (24no off 40) Gaz (18no off 15) and Georgie (16 off 17) helped us to a good total of 5- 241 off our 40 over. After a short break we opened with Rosco and Troy. We bowled well and felled pretty well as the scorecard indicates. Everyone pretty much had a bowl with Sad topping off a good day with 3 wickets to go with his runs. Kap snared 2 and add in a couple of run outs we did pretty well. West Tamer finished on 151 with everyone enjoying a decent run and a good day out. Bbq and beers helped to round out the game with us having this weekend off before hosting Marrawah at Port Sorell on the 1st March.

On Sunday we welcomed the travelling Qld team (Old Gits) to the Port Sorell cricket club. They are visiting our state this week playing various Masters teams over their stay. Due to various players being unavailable, we welcomed 5 new players to the fold. Scott Johnson, Stevie May, Greg Hoey, Kevin Mc Crossen and Leslie lambert. The old Gits won the toss and decided to have have a bat on a blustery and very cool day. We opened with Andy and Scott. Both bowled well with Andy striking early. Their number 1 and 3 then batted well and at the first drinks break (15 over) they were 1/80. However after the drinks break we were able to contain them with everyone bowling and fielding pretty well. Les 0-11 off 8, Gibbo. 2-27 off 8, Andy 1-38 off 8 and Pricey 2-12 off 5 the pick of the bowlers. After their 45 overs the had managed 167 which we thought was a great effort after the start they had. Rohan (5) and Gibbo (37 no) opened the batting and their bowlers bowled very tight which saw us at the first drinks break (1-30) so well behind the eight ball. Unfortunately things didn’t get much better with wickets falling consistently which didn’t allow us to put on any real meaningful partnerships. We pretty much limped towards their total and it wasn’t till Gibbo returned to bat with Esmay (19) to put on 48 that made our score semi respectable. We finished 28 runs short which was disappointing however the Old Gits bowled well and we just didn’t bat well enough in the end. It still was a great day (apart from the weather as well) and thanks to Dean, Claude and crew for helping with the catering afterwards.
Next Sunday we have a Tier 1 game against the Twilighters so hopefully we can get back on the winners list after two losses. Cheers 🏏🏏🍷🍷
