Port Sorell have claimed the Tier 1 Cup in the Masters Cricket Tasmania competition, marking a memorable milestone as the club becomes first-time winners of the Tier 1 title.
Played at Ross, the match was a fantastic showcase of Masters cricket. Batting first, Port Sorell compiled a strong total of 257 for 5, highlighted by excellent contributions throughout the order, with 5 retirees. Paul Smith led the way with a well-made 46, while Claude Orlando added 43 and Nick Sallese 41. Peter Georgiades also played an important hand with 36 with John Gibson chipping in with 20 off his 40 balls, helping to set a challenging target,
In reply, LOXI lost 2 quick wickets in the first two overs, however Brian Pigden 55 no and Ivan Dunuwille (41) set in resurrecting the innings. Port Sorell’s bowling and fielding kept them slightly in front at drinks (22nd) with LOXI 4-88. Mick Hortle (19 no) and Garry Collins (20) fought hard but were eventually dismissed for 163,
All bowlers bowled well (apart from the Captain) and the wickets were spread around.
Importantly, this win represents Port Sorell’s first Tier 1 Cup triumph, a terrific achievement for the club and a fitting reward for a strong season, with one game to go.
A big thank you must go to everyone who has played with us this season.
We have grown over the last three years with 37 players in our group. Our roster this year went from approx 5 games last season to 11 games ( including the touring Qld team, the Old Gits) this season The continued support and participation of players is what keeps Masters Cricket thriving.
Tier 1 matches are particularly important for the development and strength of Masters Cricket within Tasmania, while still in its infancy it is providing us an opportunity to play under “National” rules and conditions while still maintaining the spirit and camaraderie that makes the format so enjoyable.
Special thanks should also go to the club contacts from all participating teams who helped organise fixtures and ensure the Tier 1 competition was able to be established and run successfully this season.
Recognition is also due to President Claude Orlando and Secretary Gary Collins for their ongoing work behind the scenes in supporting Masters Cricket Tasmania and helping the competition continue to grow.
Finally, a mention must go once again to the Ross ground, with the pitch once again presented in fantastic condition and providing an excellent surface for the game.
Looking forward to our last game against the Thylacinians in Ross this coming Sunday.
