Port Neill Golf Celebrated the Denny Cox Shield .
With Perfect weather and a solid field of 17 players playing to win the inaugural title. The Cox family had 4 generation in attendance for Dennis (Denny) to ring the bell to start the card Draw and the Day. Denny first started his golfing days in 1960 when He's said a lot of learning was needed and many scores were between 120 and 150. Denny's first club championship came soon after in 1961. In 1973 Denny took on the role of club secretary and the started his unequaled 17 Port Neill golf Champion only interrupted by Geoff Will for one year in 1980 . He again won in 1992 and 93 making 20 in total. Denny also was treasurer on 5 occasions and Club Captain on 3 occasions. The early days of golf only had a 3 sided shed as a clubhouse , warm long neck beer and port but in 1976 lead by Jim Fauser the club president the current club house was built in its idyllic position now. Still in good shape passing 50 years. Dennys course record 70 nett 62 with 46 stableford point on the 10th june 1984 was only beaten by Robert Bell of Port Lincoln.
The winner of the day was Trent Bates with 39 stableford points, runner up on 37 on a count back was Ed Hunt from Steve Davidson 37,Rick Will 36,Mark Pfitzner 33, David Pollard 31,Evan Hunt 30, Kevin Nicholles 29, Jarrod Prime 28, Mason Hunt 29 (off junior tees. ) Andrew Lidicoat 26, Abe Devries 26, Paul Searle 25, Jayden Blewett 24, Mark Ward 21, Non Golfers Dustin Lienert 40 on a callaway scoring over Denny’s grandson Brett Bray 29 also in attendance was Bretts dad Scott, who 28 years previous had hit a hole in one.
The Sheriff was busy with fines for the usually mister minas , no more deserving was the Naga winner Mark Ward who presented
himself in less than average condition after just 8 stableford points on the front nine reduced his club selection to just 2 irons and a putter and slumped into a golf buggy to finish the round.
To Cap off a fantastic Day the Cox family supplied a huge afternoon tea thanks to Jody and helpers .
