Yesterday I took the Can Am to SEAC Park for a Day/Night Autocross. The track started out slick but dried out more with every run. The buggy was unfazed by the conditions and I managed to stay relatively clean and dry too. Check out this lap, as the sun goes down.

Here is a lap of course 1 at Twin Peaks. Fighting understeer on pretty knackered tyres but still fun.

Richard and I had a great weekend with our racing buddies at Twin Peaks Hillclimb. Richard finished his first Twin Peaks in 15th with a straight car and 3rd in class. I had a fun battle with Oliver Taylor for the win. I set new PB times on both courses but had to settle for 2nd, with David Harris in 3rd. Congrats guys.

Thank you Turn 8 Photography and The Project Department for the hundreds of great photos from the weekend.

Yesterday Richard and I ventured to Rob Roy hillclimb. We were impressed with the facilities and how well the event was run. All of the staff were very welcoming too.
My driving was a bit rusty on the first run but I got the hang of it by the second run and set consistent times for the rest of the day. Richard drove his Ute really well to finish second in class. I managed first in class and third outright, way behind two very fast open wheelers. We both had a great day and will be back again for sure.

Round 1 of the 2026 Trydel EZIUP Victorian Hillclimb Championship done, 6 more to go!

Mike Barker has started the year as strong as you can winning the overall trophy, beating his own record for the Rob Roy Long Track in the process. He steered his Hayward 06 to a 23.70 (Previous record was 23.81).
Harrison Bishop was seven hundredths of a second behind in his Hayward, with a best of 23.77 getting him 2nd overall.
Damien Brand was 3rd on the podium in his WRX STI, with 26.00.

The weather was pretty perfect for hillclimb, thank you to MG Car Club Victoria for hosting an excellent event, and thank you to the competitors and spectators for getting into the sport.

Round 2 will be held at Bryant Park on Feb 22nd, using the 'Clockwise' layout. Entries open tomorrow! (19th of Jan).

Factory Subaru blocks can fail here, but does this build have all the right fixes?

Subaru engines are often criticised for reliability once boost and power increase, particularly when the factory cast block begins to separate under load. Damien Brand of B-Sport gives us a detailed breakdown of a 1250kg 1999 Version 5 GC8 Subaru Impreza STI hill climb car that has been built with reliability as the primary goal, not headline power numbers.

This car uses a Crest CNC billet block and cylinder heads to address known Subaru issues such as main case fretting, uneven exhaust port flow, and limited clamping force. The engine produces 480kW at the wheels on 28 psi of boost using a BorgWarner 9280 turbocharger, deliberately operating well within the component limits.

Some of the supporting systems that make this package work in a hill climb environment are also covered, including an RCM dry sump system, a PBG six-speed sequential gearbox with rally-style push-pull paddle shift, and a full MoTeC electronics package featuring an M150 engine control unit, dual PDM30 power distribution modules, E8 expander, C125 display, and keypad.

The discussion focuses on why these choices matter for longevity, oil control, drivability, and data logging in hill climb competition, and why building a Subaru once and building it right is often the fastest approach in the long run, and after 10 years of effort, Damien certainly wants to get as much enjoyment as possible.
