Port Kembla Cricket Club

Port Kembla Cricket Club An organisation for cricketers young and old. Making great people first and good cricketers second. C (the eventual 1912 premiers). C. As Port Kembla D. Mills, C.

Originally founded by the Darcy Roaders, based around a group of cricketers living opposite Electrolytic Refining & Smelting on Darcy Road in Port Kembla, the team was officially called the Electrolytic Company Club in 1912, playing its first official game on the 18th March 1912 defeating the team from Wollongong C. The success of teams selected from workers of the Electrolytic Company and the Dar

cy Roaders prompted team captain Jack Petfield to press for the formation of the Port Kembla District Cricket Club. A meeting was held on 5th September 1912 at the Great Eastern Hotel (now called Steelworks Hotel) where the Port Kembla D. was officially formed and the first office bearers appointed. Mr Jack Petfield was officially appointed the first 1st grade Captain. C., the first match was played against Wollongong at (now) Wollongong Showground. Port Kembla temporarily played home games at Wollongong until generous financial assistance was given by the management of Electrolytic Refining & Smelting Co. (then the only major industry in Port Kembla), which donated the first ground and wicket, which was laid at the northern end of the Electrolytic Company grounds in Port Kembla (now tennis court and car park near Police Station). The original wicket can be seen in the pictures below. This was used almost continuously until 1939. Dr. Kirkwood was instrumental in having a turf wicket laid down in 1925. This proved unsuccessful because of problems arising regarding upkeep. Later, a strip was laid down at Kemblawarra Oval and still later transferred to its present location at King George V Oval. Some of the finest cricketers ever to play in the Illawarra have padded up for Port Kembla since the club's inception in 1912. Three of these players, Albert Bennett, Max Hanna and Frank Jones represented against international teams. The general opinion of supporters of many years standing is that the late Herb Mills was the best cricketer to ever play for Port Kembla. Herb was also a state rugby league referee. It was also generally agreed that Gordon Rodwell was the best ever captain and later cricket administrator to emerge from the smoke stacks. The club won its first premiership in 1914-15. Competitions were suspended during the First World War, and Port Kembla returned to the winning list in 1921-2, 1922-3, and 1923-4 with three successive premierships. In the 54 years of the club's history (article originally written 1966), the following players gave more than 15 years service: H.A. Ackerman, C. Brewer, S. Small, E. Leplastrier, G. Rodwell, M. Simon and G. Hoffman.

Vale Brian Prosser – A True Legend of the Port Kembla Cricket Club

It is with a heavy heart that the Port Kembla Cricket Club informs our community of the passing of Brian Prosser, a long-term committee member, supporter, and dear friend to so many.

Over the last decade, Brian was the engine room behind the regrowth of our club. He didn’t just hold titles like Vice President and Secretary; he held the vision for what Port could become. If you’ve walked past the new white picket fence, used the brand-new net facilities, or seen the sight screens at King George V Oval, you are looking at Brian’s legacy. He project-managed these grants and builds with the kind of dedication only a man who truly loved his club could give.

But Brian was more than just projects and paperwork. He was the heart of the "home sheds." He famously instilled a new sense of belief in our grade sides with his iconic line, “It’s time”, a mantra that eventually led our First Grade side to a historic season and a Grand Final where he got to watch his son, Ethan, lead the team with the ball.

Whether he was sharing a laugh and a beer with Marty and Mick, chatting with sponsors, or solving the club's next big challenge, Brian had a heart bigger than most.
Our deepest condolences go out to Ruth, Emma, Ethan, and the entire family.
Rest easy, Brian. Your song will keep playing at King George V.

A HUGE congratulations to our captain, Jack Yates, who was officially named the Cricket Illawarra Ron Ring Senior Cricketer of the Year!
This is a massive individual honor, but as Jack highlighted in his acceptance speech, it’s also a reflection of the “strong, positive culture the club has built around a committed playing group.” Leading from the front is an understatement; he was sensational this season.
Check out the incredible numbers that earned him this top award:
390 Runs @ 35.45
26 Wickets @ 15.88
It was also a classic Port Kembla family moment when Jack gave a special shout-out to his “old man,” Mark, for the approximately “10,000 throw downs” over the years! We’d say they were worth every single one.
Jack, the entire Port Kembla community is incredibly proud of your achievement and grateful for your leadership this year. Get around him, everyone!
