Port Kembla history ๐โโ๏ธ
Port Kembla Olympic Pool and Port Kembla beach, also known as Perkins beach.
On the 25th of April 1770 Captain Cook (Lieutenant at the time) was searching for water and came inshore just north of Red Point which is below Hill 60. He named Port Kembla: Red Point as he saw the red rocks along the coast and at this time also noted Mount Kembla and Mount Keira. Port Kembla beach was also referred to as Kembla Bay and Five Islands Bay before being called Port Kembla in the late 1800โs by the owner of Mount Kembla colliery.
Port Kembla beach is also known as Perkins beach after the family that lived on Big Island in the 1800's. It is the longest beach in the Wollongong area at 6.5km long and one of the cleanest despite its proximity to the steel works. In 2010 it was awarded the cleanest beach in New South Wales in the clean beach challenge. Austinmer beach won this title in 2001.
In the 1950's there were massive sand dunes all the way along Port Kembla beach and the rumour is that this sand was shipped to Waikiki beach, Hawaii. However, this rumour is unconfirmed.
The original sea water pool at Port was built in 1937 and when it opened 5000 people turned out to witness it, the hillside was packed with people. The original pool was demolished and rebuilt in 1998, it re opened in 2000 on the same date and time as the original pool in 1937.
