Summary of Shihan Leisa’s discussion on Compassion.
Compassion in Martial Arts
Compassion, rooted in "to suffer with," goes beyond empathy. It's the genuine desire to alleviate someone's suffering and ease their pain. In martial arts, our journey isn't just physical; it's about inner growth and character.
As martial artists, we aim to defend ourselves and protect others physically, but the true strength lies in showing kindness and compassion daily. We may not frequently encounter situations requiring physical intervention, but we can practice compassion regularly.
In the dojo, creating a safe environment is crucial. Everyone faces unique challenges—physical, neurodivergent, or sensory. While we can't always alter the environment for individual needs, we can offer support, kindness, and understanding. Tolerance, patience, goodwill, and acceptance form the spirit of the dojo.
Martial arts instill not only physical power but also the inner strength and wisdom to extend compassion to those in need.
