Join Stew this Saturday for the first of his series of workshops exploring some of the key themes in yoga philosophy.

This workshop will be an exploration of the Yoga Sutras of Patañjali and the eight limbs of yoga — from the ethical foundations of practice through to meditation and the deepest states of awareness.

Together, we’ll explore the bigger picture of Patañjali’s teachings, dipping into some of the key sutras from across the text and following the arc of the eight-limbed path.

We’ll begin with 10 minutes of movement to arrive in the body, then explore some key sutras, asking the question: What is yoga really asking us to practice? There will be time for reflection and questions, before finishing with a guided meditation.

No prior knowledge needed — just come curious. 🧘

WHEN: Saturday 19th September
TIME: 3:30-5.00 pm
INVESTMENT: BOOK ONE OR JOIN THE WHOLE SERIES

On Sunday 20 September, we’ll gather for our regular Sunday Vinyasa with a little different intention.
The following day is the International Day of Peace / a global day inviting us to pause, reflect and consider what peace might look like in our own lives, our communities and our world.

So we’re turning our Sunday practice into an offering.

Come to move, breathe, listen and practise together.
This class will be by donation rather than our usual class fee, with 100% of donations going to Peace Direct (https://www.peacedirect.org/)

No particular experience or perfect state of mind is required. Just come as you are.
Because peace isn’t only something we hope for somewhere in the world, it begins here in how we breathe, how we listen, how we meet one another, and how we choose to move through the world.

What changes when we stop moving first and breathing second? A lot.
In yoga, the breath isn’t simply something that keeps us alive while we move.
It can become the thread that connects the movement.

Inhale.
Reach.
Exhale.
Soften.
Inhale.
Expand.
Exhale.
Release.

When we begin to link breath with movement, something shifts.
We become a little less concerned with getting somewhere and a little more interested in being where we are.

The breath gives movement rhythm.
Movement gives the breath somewhere to go.

And suddenly, a posture isn’t just a shape the body is trying to make.
We are listening.
We notice when the breath becomes shallow.
We notice when we’re holding it.
We notice when we’re trying too hard.
We notice when something softens.

That awareness is part of the practice.
This is one of the beautiful things about yoga: the breath gives us a way to practise staying connected to ourselves while something is happening.
Not just when everything is calm.

When we’re balancing.
When we’re challenged.
When we’re uncomfortable.
When things don’t quite go to plan.

The same breath is there.
Inhale.
Exhale.
Begin again.
And eventually, the practice leaves the mat.

We may not consciously count our breath while answering an email, navigating a difficult conversation or standing in the middle of a particularly chaotic Monday...
…but we can remember what it feels like to pause.
To breathe.
To notice.
To respond rather than react.

The movement matters.
But the breath can be what transforms the movement into practice.

Shanti. Shanti. Shanti.
Peace. Peace. Peace.

Many yoga classes close with these words, sometimes so familiar that we can forget to pause and consider what we’re actually saying.

Shanti is a Sanskrit word commonly translated as peace, tranquillity or calm. In traditional peace invocations, it is repeated three times : a calling for peace in the face of the disturbances that arise within us, around us and beyond our control.

Maybe that is why the practice feels particularly meaningful right now.
Because peace is not the same thing as the absence of difficulty.

We live in a world where there is conflict, suffering, uncertainty and fear.

We experience it collectively.
We experience it in our communities.
And sometimes we carry it quietly within ourselves.

So, when we say Shanti Shanti Shanti, we aren’t pretending that everything is okay.
We are setting an intention.
For a little more peace within ourselves.
For peace between ourselves and others.
For peace in the wider world.

On Sunday 20 September, The Dock Studios will turn our regular Sunday Vinyasa into A Practice for Peace, gathering together in the lead-up to the International Day of Peace.

We’ll move, breathe, listen and practise together with no particular experience or perfect state of mind required.

Just come as you are.

The class will be offered by donation, with 100% of donations going to Peace Direct.

Yoga is so much more than what happens on the mat.
Behind the physical practice is a rich philosophical tradition that asks some very human questions:

How do we live well?
How do we navigate difficult decisions?
Why do we suffer?
And how can we become less caught in the patterns of our own minds?

Join Stew as we explore three fascinating aspects of yoga philosophy in a special three-part Philosophy Series.

Each workshop is 90 minutes and will combine a short movement practice, storytelling, philosophy, discussion, reflection and meditation. No previous knowledge of yoga philosophy is needed — just bring your curiosity.

1. THE YOGA SUTRAS — THE PATH OF YOGA
Explore the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali and discover the Eight Limbs of Yoga — from the ethical foundations of yoga through to meditation and deeper states of awareness.
What is yoga really asking us to practise?

2. THE BHAGAVAD GITA — YOGA IN EVERYDAY LIFE
Through the story of Arjuna and Krishna, we’ll explore one of yoga philosophy’s most enduring questions:
How do I act when life is complicated and I don’t know how things will turn out?
We’ll explore Dharma, Karma Yoga, action, attachment and surrender, and how these ancient teachings can help us navigate work, relationships, decisions, uncertainty and everyday life.

3. THE KLESHAS — WHY WE SUFFER & HOW WE GET CAUGHT
Why do we keep reacting in the same ways?
Why do we overthink, compare, cling, avoid, seek approval or try to control things we can’t control?
We’ll take a deeper look at the five Kleshas and explore how yoga philosophy understands the patterns that create suffering — and, importantly, how awareness can help us create space between what happens and how we respond.

TIME: 3:30-5.00 pm

How do we market yoga without losing sight of the philosophy?

This is something we’ve been thinking about at The Dock Studios lately.
Like any small business, we need to promote what we do.
We need people to know our classes exist.
We need to reach new students, fill workshops and events, pay our teachers, keep the lights on and—hopefully—keep the doors open for many years to come.

Marketing is part of that reality.
But yoga also asks us to reflect on some interesting things.

Aparigraha invites us to consider non-grasping and our relationship with accumulation.
Brahmacharya asks us to consider how and where we direct our energy.
Santosha invites us to cultivate contentment.

And yet, the world of marketing can sometimes seem to pull in the opposite direction.
You need more.
You need to be better.
You need to change your body.
You need to keep up.
You might be missing out.

So how do we invite people into a yoga practice without creating the very sense of lack that the practice itself might eventually help us question?
How do we promote without pressuring?
How do we grow a business without constantly feeding the idea that we need more?
How do we share the benefits of practice without promising transformation?

Maybe part of the answer lies in honesty.

In simply saying:
We would love more people to find The Dock.
Not because they are broken and need fixing.
Not because they need to become more flexible, thinner, calmer, stronger or somehow better.
But because we believe yoga, movement, breath and community can offer something meaningful.
And because, rather practically, a community studio can only continue to exist if there is a community to sustain it.

We’re still figuring out where the balance sits.
And that’s the point of this post.

For those of you who work in yoga, wellness, health, or any values-led business, how do you balance marketing and promotion with the ethos at the heart of what you do?

We’d genuinely love to hear your thoughts. 🤍

24/08/2026

The weather can’t seem to make up its mind.

One day we’re feeling the first warmth of spring, the next we’re reaching for another layer as cold rain rolls through.

And perhaps there’s something to learn from that too.

In Buddhist philosophy, there is a beautiful concept called Anicca / impermanence.
The recognition that everything is continually changing.

Nothing stays exactly as it is.
The weather changes.
The seasons change.
Our bodies change.
Our relationships change.
Our energy changes.
And so do the difficult moments.

When we’re in the middle of something uncomfortable, it can be very easy to believe this is how it will always feel.

But Anicca gently reminds us:
This too will change.

On the yoga mat, we experience impermanence in very tangible ways.
A posture that feels spacious one day may feel restricted the next.

Our balance changes.
Our strength changes.
Our breath changes.
Our capacity changes.

Even within a single practice, sensations arise, shift and disappear.

Rather than trying to hold on to the moments that feel good or push away the ones that don’t, we can practise simply noticing.

This is what is happening right now.
And then, eventually, it changes.

Perhaps this is one of the reasons yoga and mindful movement can be such powerful practices for navigating life.

They give us a safe place to experience change again and again.
To learn that discomfort has movement within it.
That ease is not permanent either.
That we don’t have to cling to either.

As the weather moves between winter and spring, perhaps we can take a little inspiration from the changing sky.

We don’t need to know exactly what comes next.
We can simply meet what is here.
Because nothing stays the same forever.

And sometimes, when life feels difficult, there is great comfort in remembering:

This moment is not the whole story. 🤍

18/08/2026

There are little signs that winter is beginning to loosen its grip.
The air is warming.
Birdsong seems a little louder in the morning.
The first blossoms are appearing.

And almost imperceptibly, the world is beginning to turn outward again.
After months of winter’s invitation to slow down, conserve energy and turn inward, there is something beautiful about noticing this gentle emergence.

Yoga asks us to pay attention.
To the breath.
To the body.
To the mind.
To the world around us.

And perhaps nature is offering us another lesson right now.

We don’t have to force ourselves into a new season.
We don’t need to suddenly become more productive, energetic or motivated because the calendar tells us spring is coming.

We can simply notice what is beginning to awaken.
A little more energy.
A little more curiosity.
A desire to move.
To connect.
To create.
To step outside.

The practice of yoga teaches us that change doesn’t always need to be dramatic. Sometimes transformation happens quietly, beneath the surface, long before anyone else can see it.

The roots have been growing all winter.
Now, when the conditions are right, something begins to emerge.
Perhaps we can do the same.
Allowing the inward work of winter to become the foundation for whatever comes next.
Not rushing towards growth.
Not demanding that we blossom on schedule.

Simply noticing...
What is beginning to stir?
What are we ready to bring into the light?
And what might still need a little more time?

At The Dock Studios, we love this liminal space between seasons; a reminder that our practice, like nature, has rhythms.
There are times to rest.
Times to root.
Times to emerge.
And times to bloom.
