Tuesday Night Ride report 09/06/2026

Oh crap, somehow I'm late! 20 riders were ready and waiting for me at Queens Gardens last night. Again, there was no ride plan and a big group - but this time I had the duallie. A couple of new faces had joined us, so I figured we should maybe try to cover some smoother trails first.

Chris led the way down the top half of 'Case of Spades', where we found some sizeable wooden ramps freshly installed. Fabian had a crack at one or two of them on the fly as the rest of us rolled past.
Chris' route took us down 'Yellow Box' into 'Aqueduct Berms' at pace - grip was plentiful, there was no dust and no mud either.

We gathered for a review of the troop (lots of fist-bumping going on), and after some faffing by Fab and a little chat I took us down 'Demon Duck' and the lower part of 'Cobblestone'. "Controversial" was a word used to describe my choice to roll straight past 'the Plank' and head 'Up Outta the River' - but I was really making it up as we went. We went 'Over the Top' (a smooth trail bypassing the RAAF rock gardens), 'Into the Dog', then 'In the Dog', crossing down to the lower line to follow the loop clockwise a bit, then turning down to the fire road ford leading past the gate into 'West World'. Mixing up these little segments keeps the rides a bit more interesting! We kept heding north until we arrived at the little dam where 'Bungalow Bill' starts. We had a short recovery break there, and then we began to spread out again.

I led the group down 'Golden Slumbers' and we continued down 'Octopuses Garden'. The dirt was so hard-packed it was almost too easy to go fast. We pulled up quickly though when a fallen tree blocked the trail - the trusty folding saw and a few strong lads had this cleared in minutes, and we continued along the narrow trail. The little water crossing was thankfully shallow and clear, but the log rollover following caught me by surprise in the dark, and I managed to miss the correct turns as we made our (shortened) way to the track's end.

After a quick debate we rode 'Up', taking an old fire road cutting straight to the top. Brutal - but not stopping just yet. 'Afternoon Delight' was fun and a little technical. Turning the whole group around at a fire trail junction, we rolled into 'Morning Glory'. This time I stayed in front, and it was brilliant. A few roos were eyeing us (likely looking for Matt D or Guy) as we blasted down the hill, but they turned away from us and up the hillside.

'Navara Climb', then 'Rocky Raccoon' brought us up to 'Ankle Track' to regroup. A couple of the lads managed to climb the entire trail, including the steep rocky top part. It was the night for it. We stayed there a little while as usual, catching our breath.

Passing some confused parkers, we rolled up 'No Bones' to 'the Tank', and I made a beeline for the Plank - pedalling fast all the way down 'Port Lane Descent'. A couple of optimists thought 'Betty's Rut' might be quicker (or just more fun), but the fast and sandy right-hander to 'the Triangle' was an absolute blast, before 'Betty Bell' really delivered the goods.

After last Sunday's vertigo on the Plank I stood aside while most of the group rolled easily over the river. I walked, but more confidently this time. It took a while for the group to gather, as Darren P had lost a jockey wheel, turning his very quick eBike into a very heavy scooter. Guy kindly stayed back with him, and we also made sure he had company and the most direct walk out (with what looked like a bit of e-assisted pushing to make things easier).

Meanwhile I found a less-used route up from 'River High Line' to the main fire road, then sent Jack up another short link and left on to 'Roo Run' and we finished on 'Old DH' (going up it of course - it's not exactly steep, and I don't know that it was ever really a 'DH' track) past the 'Sandy Dam' where all of the dirt jumps have recently been levelled =(

We finished up on time at 9pm, with about 20km and 450m of climbing in our legs, before those that could stay around had a drink and talked bikes.

This is an important part of Plenty Gorge MTB Club - we do this every Tuesday night, and we love it. It's usually a tough ride (with stops, but also with banter and sweating) but we love sharing the experience with you.

Tuesday Night Ride report 26/05/2026

For the very first time we stuck to the ride plan all the way through!

We thought it was going to rain, but it didn't. I thought it was going to be cold, so I was way over-dressed. The expected weather might have dropped the number of riders last night, but there were still 10 of us at The Tank at 6.45pm. Michele said he'd looked at the ride plan but everyone else was living purely in the moment ;)

The route started with a quick cruise down Jess' Track, around Mr Lincoln's and Switching back up to The Tank. Then down Rusty Tin and the whole Dam Run - grip levels were superb, no dust, no mud. Gravel quotient 1 took us up the fire road and we paused briefly after the first 5.8km. My hardtail was absolutely singing as we rolled right down Port Lane Descent, up Boxing Roos and into Bettys Rut, then Wiggle It to the next gravel quotient. This smooth old fire road took us socially up to the gate where I had to consult my directional notes for the next bit: left, left, veer right and blast down Sandy Slog, followed by a tight and steep left hander to head the wrong way up 'DH to the River' (which really needs a new name). There was much cursing and crunching of gears as we struggled up the sharp rocky pinches - which I failed to clear at the front, holding a few people up. Eventually we reached the post at 5-ways junction and stopped to catch our breath and I fielded a few well-deserved sledges.

Then it was an about-face, veer right, sharp right (bit of a theme with these sudden turns) up the top bit of Sandy Slog, left, left again 'To The Crossing', right down through the gully and up the steep climb 'Crossing the Divide' then the more familiar roll down 'Am I Lost?' - beware a leaning tree on the fast descent just before the switchback and climb out. Crop Circles followed, with everyone's new favourite thing: a sharp uphill turn, into Crop Top before we stopped for a break, around 12.5km in.

Goat Track always threatens to pitch you down into the gorge - mind those pedals! We grovelled up Goat link and recovered a little heading towards Yellow Gum park.

The final loop started with Rocky Raccoon link into Strawberry link and a sketchy roll down through the Fields - I wasn't breaking any records down there on the Lynskey. Twist & Shout, left into Ozymandias and the downstream flow of Gorgeous George (one wallaby, one wombat, both clear of the trail - Matt was not threatened this time), and a tired climb up Rocky Raccoon and No Bones.

20km, about 500m of climbing, absolutely perfect night and a cold drink at the post-ride carpark catch-up.

This was a great loop without crossing the river once - might be good to keep it in mind if we get any flooding!

Next week we head back into the Norge, where it seems likely there will be wombats, rocks, and probably mud.

This morning we hosted Warrandyte MBC and some riders even drove up from Geelong!

Gathered at the start were
35 riders. We warmed up on fire road and single-track up to The Tank, where we briefed everyone and split into two groups.
I led the 'enthusiasts' while Mel swept. Strawberry Link, Rocky Raccoon, Welcome Back, Morning Glory - grip was abundant, the descent was fast, and there were walkers and runners about too. We had one straggler (Luke) peel off very early - thanks Chris for escorting them back. Then a mechanical took a second rider out shortly after that, as their chain was slipping and it wasn't something we could fix on the trail and they made their own way out. Jambi brought exposure, Myxo tested us with technical rock gardens.
Mel did a solid job keeping our group together, big kudos earned. Scatterbrain over the ridge was flat, then a very quick blast down Long & Winding, Enjoy Bridge, the sweet flow of Ozymandias and Gorgeous George, and a horrible crawl up the old Fire Trail rut. Eventually we finished the first loop of 13km - at 10:45. Sending some tired riders back to the carpark, I took about half of my original group on an Am I Lost loop - where Tony punctured (pictured he is poking bits of rubber into his tyre), and Alex C exploded a very worn chain. We finished at 11:45 after a considerably quicker extra 7km and a total elevation of 500m.

But overall it was fun, right?

PG is aerobically relentless (is that a term?) - the Club highly recommends that you ride with the social group before trying your hand with the not so social group.

The 'Social group' was led by Daryl with Jason sweeping.
Starting with White Cow, down to the river via Betty Bell, across the plank and then West they went via In the Dog.
Simon had an off at the In The Dog/Janefield crossing resulting in a suspected broken wrist - many thanks to Trev who escorted him up to Linacre Drive where he was able to be picked up. The rest tackled Westworld, Bungalow Bill, Kangaroo Ridge, went down Up! Then across Welcome Back Bridge and up the Old Fire Trail Rut and back to the car park, finishing almost on time around 11:15.

Lots of smiles and good times!
