𝗕𝗜𝗚 talk but very little impact from the Federal Government's proposed national gun buyback, which has stalled with state governments pushing back due to concerns about cost-sharing, practicality, lack of consultation and evidence that the changes would actually improve public safety.

In a very surprising move for some state and territory governments, it seems that they are unwilling to foot the bill for something that looks good politically, but delivers very little practical value... (𝘪 𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘢 𝘯𝘦𝘸 $200+ 𝘮𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘦 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘪𝘯 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘵𝘩?🤔🤷‍♂️)

The proposal is in many ways seen as a knee-jerk reaction to the Bondi terror attack, under which, ironically, (based on a report from NSW Police) the offenders would 𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙝𝙖𝙫𝙚 𝙗𝙚𝙚𝙣 𝙡𝙞𝙘𝙚𝙣𝙨𝙚𝙙 - meaning the reforms would not have prevented the attack.

Locally, the Cook state government did not support the buyback stating that the recent re-write of the act in WA had already gone further, and now boasted the "𝘵𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘨𝘶𝘯 𝘭𝘢𝘸𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘺".

The WA Liberals have criticised the re-write of the act as an overreach and punitive towards licensed owners, while the Nationals have taken a stronger position, especially regarding the impacts on farmers, conservation and pest management in regional WA.

In response to the recent surge in popularity of Pauline Hanson's One Nation Party (and commensurate backlash against regional Labor-held seats), politicians are forced to rethink their position on Albo's proposed national buyback and their relationship with law-abiding fi****ms owners in their electorates.

As it turns out, punishing grass-roots sporting shooters, farmers and conservationists for the actions of actual criminals is not a viable, winning political strategy... who knew. 😮🫢🤷

📢 Big Wins in the East, But WA Stays Vigilant 🧐

​BIG news out of VIC - the state government officially announced they are saying NO to firearm caps - a HUGE win for licensed firearm owners nationwide.

Following the Bondi tragedy, there was immense political pressure for a blanket rollout of firearm limits across the country.

​Thanks to an incredible, coordinated push by Sporting Shooters' Association of Australia - SSAA Inc, Shooters Union Australia and everyday members writing letters and signing petitions, the narrative is shifting. Here's how the national landscape looks right now:

✅️ ​No Caps/Restrictions: VIC, SA, QLD and NT have all rejected firearm limits.

☑️ ​Still in Play: TAS and the ACT are still proposing restrictions, so the fight continues down south.

​What does this mean for WA?

While five out of eight states & territories are rejecting caps, we know all too well that WA faces its own unique, ongoing legislative hurdles.

However, this eastern states momentum is incredibly important. It proves that the federal government and state bodies are losing the appetite for arbitrary restrictions when pushed back with actual evidence.

​As the ongoing Royal Commission investigates the Bondi attack, the evidence overwhelmingly confirms that these issues stem from intelligence-sharing and resourcing failures—not law-abiding, licensed firearm owners.

​The lesson here is that the advocacy works. When the fivearms community present a united front, we can protect our sport.
