Perth Junior Roller Derby (PJRD) is the first Junior Roller Derby League here in Western Australia. Kids aged between 7 and 17 can learn the skills of roller derby without the smashy smashy and have lots of fun doing it. It is run and coached by real derby people, which is more fun because our youth members also get to see their coaches play in matches. We are 100 % volunteer run and not affiliate
d with any other roller derby league. Find out more about our basic entrance requirements below. We offer three free trial sessions so that you can decide whether roller derby is for you. During this time we will determine whether you have sufficient skating abilities to join PJRD or if you need to brush up on your skills. If our coaches decide that you aren’t at a sufficient skating ability we kindly ask that you respect our decision as safety is our key concern. In that case we recommend putting in more practice or getting lessons and try again at a later date. PRIOR EXPERIENCE
You don’t need any previous experience playing roller derby, but you do need to be able to skate. At a minimum, you should be able to skate in a controlled manner without holding onto rails or repeatedly falling down. You should be able to turn and change directions and bring yourself to a safe stop. You should feel comfortable skating. Unfortunately, we don’t have enough coaches to teach new skaters how to skate. You can quickly improve your skating by practicing at your local skate park or enrolling in learn to skate classes at your local skate rink. EQUIPMENT
Roller Derby is a contact sport and we take safety very seriously. At a minimum all our skaters are required to have the following equipment:
Good quality skates. Cheap roller skates are not suitable for derby. Skate helmet (not a bike helmet!)
Knee, elbow and wrist guards
Mouth guard. If you are serious about joining PJRD we can advise you about appropriate skates and derby gear. Second hand gear is often available for sale on Gumtree or Facebook Marketplace.
