🥊 Hand Placement During Defence

Good defence starts with good habits—and hand placement is one of the most important.

Where your hands are positioned can make the difference between blocking a strike and leaving an opening.

Focus on:

✔️ Keeping your hands high enough to protect your head
✔️ Bringing your hands back to guard after every strike
✔️ Keeping your elbows in to help protect your body
✔️ Staying relaxed so you can react quickly
✔️ Maintaining your guard even when you're tired

It's easy to drop your hands when you're focused on attacking, but strong defence comes from staying disciplined and aware throughout every exchange.

The best defence often starts before the strike is even thrown. 🥊

Not every technique works from the same distance.

One of the most important skills in Muay Thai is understanding range and knowing which strikes are most effective based on where you are in relation to your opponent.

At long range, kicks and teeps can help you manage distance and keep your opponent at bay. As the gap closes, punches and combinations become more effective. In close range, knees, elbows, and clinch work often take over.

When you understand range, you're less likely to force techniques that aren't there and more likely to make smart decisions in the moment.

The best fighters don't just know how to strike—they know when they're in the right position to do it.

🥊 Why Technique Breaks Down Under Fatigue

Ever notice how techniques that feel sharp early in training become harder to execute later in the session?

Fatigue affects more than just your energy levels. It can impact your focus, timing, balance, and decision-making.

When you're tired, you may find yourself:

✔️ Dropping your guard
✔️ Rushing techniques
✔️ Losing balance during strikes
✔️ Forgetting the fundamentals

That's why it's important to keep practising good habits, even when you're exhausted. The goal isn't just to perform well when you're fresh, it's to maintain solid technique when fatigue sets in.

Training under fatigue helps reveal what needs work and reinforces the fundamentals that matter most.

trong strikes don't come from your arms or legs alone—they come from your whole body working together.

Good rotation helps transfer power from the ground, through your hips and core, and into your strikes. Without it, you may be working harder than you need to.

To improve your rotation:

✔️ Turn your hips with your strikes
✔️ Engage your core throughout the movement
✔️ Stay balanced and controlled
✔️ Let your shoulders and hips work together

Remember, rotation isn't about forcing movement—it's about creating a smooth, connected flow through your entire body.

The more efficiently you rotate, the more power and control you can generate with less effort. 🥊

A powerful kick starts long before your shin makes contact.

One of the most important details is the pivot of your supporting foot. Without it, you limit your rotation, reduce power, and put unnecessary stress on your body.

When pivoting for kicks, focus on:

✔️ Turning your supporting foot in the direction of the kick
✔️ Allowing your hips to rotate freely
✔️ Staying balanced throughout the movement
✔️ Returning to a strong stance after the kick lands

A proper pivot helps generate more power, improves your range, and keeps your technique efficient.

Sometimes the biggest improvements come from the details happening on the ground, not just the strike itself. 🥊

🥊 Punch Retraction: Bringing Your Hands Back Fast

Most people focus on throwing the punch.
Experienced fighters know the return is just as important.

After every punch, your hand should come straight back to guard. A fast retraction helps you stay protected and ready for what comes next.

Why it matters:

✔️ Keeps your defence strong after striking
✔️ Helps you reset quickly for the next technique
✔️ Improves the speed and flow of your combinations
✔️ Reduces openings for counters

A punch isn’t finished when it lands, it's finished when you're back in position and ready to move again.

🥊 How Tension Slows You Down

Trying too hard can sometimes work against you.

When your body is tense, your movement becomes tighter, slower, and less efficient. Strikes can feel heavier—but not always cleaner or faster.

Too much tension can:
✔️ Slow down your speed and reactions
✔️ Drain your energy quicker
✔️ Affect your timing and rhythm
✔️ Make it harder to stay fluid between techniques

The goal is to stay controlled without being rigid. Relax where you can, stay sharp where you need to.

The more relaxed your movement, the more natural your technique feels. 🥊

A lot of people think more tension means more power — but in Muay Thai, staying relaxed often makes your strikes better.

When you stay loose, your movement becomes faster, smoother, and more efficient. Too much tension can slow you down and burn unnecessary energy.

Focus on:
✔️ Relaxing your shoulders and arms
✔️ Breathing naturally as you strike
✔️ Staying fluid between combinations
✔️ Releasing tension without losing control

The goal isn’t to be soft — it’s to stay relaxed enough to move freely and strike with flow.
