Naginata and Yari: Pole arm Shihan Peter James: Started training in Kenpo Karate in 1974 with Daniel’s Martial Arts Academy, in 1977/8 he attended Roger Smarts Wing Chun Academy and also studied Bando Banshi Kick Boxing. In the early eighties, Shihan trained in Tae Kwon Do for 10 year. He was involved in a number of tournaments around Australia and was also awarded referee qualifications. Shihan joined Shinto Seishin Ryu Kenjutsu in 1987 and after a number of years was awarded the level of Kyoshi. In 1998 Shihan formed the WA School of Japanese Swordsmanship and called the style Shin Sei Kan, this teaches a blend of the best techniques from a number of styles. In addition to sword, Shihan James studied extensively in tactical knife systems in America under Sifu James Keating (Shihan is the only Keating qualified bowie instructor in Australia and continues to travel to the USA to train with Mr. Keating) and in Australia with Special Forces personnel. A study of Kali has also been undertaken under the tutelage of Siebert Sensei and Sifu Keating. Shihan James trained and completed in Western Fencing (Epee) to compliment his sword skills and to indulge his love of the sword, he is currently studying the history and application of the Rapier. He holds a 3rd Dan in Seitei Iaido under the International Kendo Federation. Shihan trained in Muso Shinden Ryu and also practices Wu style Tai Chi under Sifu Vincent Cordeiro. Shihan has been involved in the Martial Arts for over 50 years. In January 2012 Shihan James adopted the title Shihan in recognition as head of the style Shin Sei Kan. In 2014 he was inducted into the Australasian Martial Arts Hall of Fame in the category of Japanese Sword Instructor of the year. In addition to the WA School of Japanese Swordsmanship, Shihan runs seminars on tactical knife systems for a wide range of Martial Arts clubs in WA. Shihan James has an extensive martial arts library and studies military history and associated strategy and tactics. In addition to his martial arts qualifications Shihan James has qualifications in Engineering, Management, a Masters degree in Business, a Graduate Diploma in Adult Education and Level 4 Certification in Training, Level 1 Coaching Certification and Senior First Aid Certificate. He runs his own business in HR Consulting in Perth, WA.
