Joong Do Kwan Australia

Joong Do Kwan Australia Joong Do Kwan is home to Colin Wee’s reflections on martial art tradition, transformation, and his seeking of tactical clarity. Explore our practice.

Discover the book(s). Rethink what martial arts can be. Joong Do Kwan is more than a martial arts school—it’s a space for inquiry, discipline, and transformation. Founded on the belief that traditional training can thrive in a progressive environment, JDK brings together practitioners who seek clarity in movement, logic in application, and depth in personal growth. Our philosophy is captured in Br

eaking Through: The Secrets of Bassai Dai Kata, an award-winning book that documents four years of focused kata study. It explores how structure, mechanics, and tactical reasoning can unlock the combative potential of traditional forms—especially when facing non-compliant opponents and dynamic situations. At JDK, students engage with both the physical and intellectual dimensions of martial arts. Training is rigorous, but the community is supportive. We challenge assumptions, refine technique, and encourage each student to bring their full self to the practice. Whether you’re a seasoned martial artist or just starting out, Joong Do Kwan invites you to explore the kwan, rethink tradition, and discover what martial arts can become when you train with purpose.

Editor Stuart Anslow and Totally Taekwondo Magazine took a punt on my book and promoted it to a largely Taekwondo audience irrespective of how Karate-like the title sounded. I was hoping more Taekwondo practitioners would see this publication as a notch for our community. Seems like people need more flexibility training! :-) Once again, thank you to Stuart for doing such a good job in the promotion of Korean martial arts!

Thank you to Dojo Cho GM Kelly Cox for allowing us to slip in this event at his dojo. This is us officially adopting Will Just 5th Dan into JDK. I don't have many black belts, so it is a pleasure having this incredible practitioner join our ranks and become part of our martial arts family.

Thank you to Jeremy Montague for providing us with beautiful photos and videos of the entire event.

Building up to the 50th anniversary celebrations of the American Karate and Taekwondo Organisation, Grandmasters Keith D. Yates, Robert Woerner, Kelly Cox and Mike Bonstaff brought a team of delegates to The Samurai Collection in downtown Dallas. Museum Director Jessica Beasley graciously led us through their exhibit, highlighting artefacts in their collection, and then engaging with Mr Cox on aspects of the armour that helped samurai function more effectively as warriors. Thank you to all who came and made this such an enjoyable event.

The most consistent benefit I've acquired from martial arts that accompanies me through all my activities in life, is a huge ability to deal with fear and performance anxiety. Whether it's public speaking, facing off a combatant, or dealing with an aggressive or belligerent associate. Martial arts training allows me to understand how to optimise my mental state and how to recover if I do "choke." This ABC podcast is an excellent presentation on what happens when your performance isn't so stellar, and what you can do to recover from the situation.

The siren has sounded. The scores are even. A footy player has one final chance to kick an easy goal to get his team into the finals. He's right in front of the goals. He lines up. Kicks. Misses. The pressure of such a moment was phenomenal, and the player choked under it. So what happens in the bra...
