ONCE-WAS-A WALK
🥾🥾 Mount Solus (17km circuit): Then and Now.
>>> ONCE was a wonderful traverse across Mount Solus, one of the highest points in the Darling Range.
⚒️⚒️NOW is yet another casualty of bauxite strip-mining expansion. Another example of how adverse 'social surroundings' impacts of the mining are increasing - and far beyond the Bibbulmun Track.

🥾🥾 NO FUTURE for Perth’s BEST potential overnight hike and trail prospect?
- Balmoral POW Camp – Three Mountains walk (29km circuit)
Forecast bauxite mining expansion impacts include:
⚒⚒⚒⚒ Fragmentation and destruction of a majority of the mature forest environment (~100 sq km) between Jarrahdale, Serpentine Dam and the Albany Hwy (adjoining the ‘Three Mounts’ area of Mts Vincent, Cuthbert, Randall).
⚒⚒⚒⚒ Loss of Balmoral Track section from historic Balmoral POW Camp to Sullivan Rock.
⚒⚒⚒⚒ Lost potential for historic Balmoral POW Camp to be a future secondary trails hub near Jarrahdale.
⚒⚒⚒⚒ Premature re-alignment of Munda Biddi MBT – already completed as an unattractive ‘shared’ trail to north of the area (from Wungong Campsite) through degraded, previously mined forest – exposing a presumption by Alcoa, DBCA and Munda Biddi Fdn that the mining expansion will proceed - despite public environmental review process not yet completed (following 59,000 submissions) with EPA recommendation to Minister still pending.
⚒⚒⚒⚒ Severe impact on Jarrahdale’s ‘trail town’ aspirations due to its massive lost opportunity to be the gateway to the hugely attractive Three Mounts area, linking into the most scenic and popular section of the Bubbulmun Track in the Northern Jarrah Forest.
💰💰 Short-term financial, workforce or other gains for Jarrahdale will be a paltry ‘reward’ from Alcoa for permanent loss of quality environment and future growth potential for the region.

⛺⛺ Camping/overnight stays away from designated campsites are banned throughout the extensive water catchment areas near Perth, but there are excellent designated campsites within, or close to, at least 20 of the WalkGPS walk routes near Perth.

Explore the quite rugged Wungong Gorge area within Wungong Regional Park. Includes two solid climbs rewarded with lots of great views. A flexible route with several enjoyable shorter options. Not to be confused with the Wungong Gorge Walk on Trails WA which is a simple there-and-back walk confined to the wide trail through the gorge.)

Bushwalkers face heavy fines if breaching bans on entering Reservoir Protection Zones around Perth region dams, due to authorities' fear of contamination of critical drinking water supplies.
Meanwhile bauxite miners are given massive exemptions to mine in the drinking water catchments despite Water Corp. strong message to state govt that such mining poses serious known risk of contaminating our drinking water supply, with huge consequences for Perth and SW population: Widespread use of bottled water and long-term water restrictions .
Boiling Cold reveals the sorry saga to date and the immense risks of the state's casual and unacceptable response to a major risk.

Mark McGowan warned Alcoa to lift its game or curtail its mining, but his successor, Roger Cook, did the opposite.

🥾🥾North Dandalup walk (15km circuit)
- just an hour's drive south from Perth for an adventure of a different kind! The highlight is the challenging but very rewarding 1km of scrambling and/or wading up North Dandalup River across small pools and around cascades below the North Dandalup Dam.
>> Definitely not for the timid or inexperienced walker!

'Celebrated' for 30 years.
Yet the threat to endangered species is accelerating in Western Australia due to huge expanding loss of critical habitat creating high risk of species extinctions.
eg Still no assurance of habitat protection and survival for:
>> Baudin's Black Cockatoo - critically endangered (on IUCN Red List); relies on the Northern Jarrah Forest for food during the non-breeding season.
>> Carnaby's Black Cockatoo - endangered/critically endangered; depends on old-growth hollows in the forest for nesting.
>> Woylie (Burrowing Bettong) - severe pressure from habitat loss and predators.
>> Western Ringtail Possum - endangered-critically endangered; relying on translocations due to pressures also on habitat.
>> Chuditch (Western Quoll) - vulnerable; survives in about 5% of its former range.
>> Mainland Quokka- massive declines, though surviving and much-appreciated on Rottnest Island.
>> Endemic wildflowers and orchids - many critically endangered.
Will Australia only value and mourn our unique wildlife when it's too late? - The Tasmanian Tiger revisited. Shame on ALL of us!

WA State Govt has at 11th hour grasped at the pursuit of gallium ('critical mineral' byproduct) to justify its pushback against the massive and growing public alarm at political head-in-the-sand complacency.
