Update 🤗

As many of you know a few weeks ago, I experienced something that was both frightening and humbling.

I suddenly found myself struggling to breathe and was treated for what appeared to be a severe anaphylactic reaction. I recovered physically, but was left with lots of questions about what had actually happened.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve attended several appointments, including an allergy clinic, in the hope of identifying the trigger.

The outcome was certainly unexpected!

Rather than an allergy being the explanation for that particular episode, I’ve been diagnosed with Inspiratory Laryngeal Obstruction (ILO), also known as Vocal Cord Dysfunction (VCD). And yes, I agree, I’m dysfunctional for sure! 😂

ILO is a condition where the vocal cords and surrounding structures in the throat narrow or close inappropriately during breathing, restricting airflow. The symptoms can closely resemble an asthma attack or anaphylaxis, creating a terrifying sensation of suffocation.

Although it can feel incredibly frightening, ILO itself is generally not life-threatening, and symptoms can often be relieved once the trigger is removed or the breathing pattern is brought back under control.

Before this experience, I’d hadn’t heard of ILO. Having a diagnosis is great, however, because I still have a diagnosis of anaphylaxis, I cannot afford to take any chances. I’ve been advised to use my EpiPen at the first signs of breathing difficulties and call an ambulance, as I must treat a potential anaphylactic reaction as an emergency. Unfortunately, adrenaline won’t treat ILO itself! 😩🤦🏼‍♀️

I’m sharing my experience because there may be others who have experienced frightening breathing difficulties and are still searching for answers. Everyone’s situation is different, but sometimes the explanation isn’t what we initially expect.

Above all, this experience has reminded me not to take the simple things in life for granted. Something as ordinary as taking an easy, effortless breath can be an extraordinary gift. ❤️😊

It’s amazing how a scary moment can be softened by the warmth of so many wonderful family, friends and ThinkFitters. A huge thank you to everyone who sent messages.

As you can see : my face looks 20 years younger 🤭 (from the skin cancer treatment) and I am back in the gym and running like nothing ever happened last Monday 💪🏻

A bit tentative without knowing the trigger that set off the anaphylactic shock but getting tests done to see if we can work it out.

Your kindness was felt deeply and I send you all big hugs in appreciation for it. 💛

Normally, I’m the one driving the ambulance for work - but not Monday. On Monday, I was the patient.

At 8:30am, I went into anaphylactic shock. I’ve never experienced anything so life-threatening before, and what made it even more frightening was that we have no idea what triggered it. It scared the absolute s**t out of me and I think Craig too.

It’s a very timely reminder to check your EpiPens if you require them. I hadn’t needed mine for 20 years, and unfortunately, it had expired. We were so lucky that Hillarys Medical Centre was only 1km away. I honestly don’t like to think about what could have happened if it had been any further.

A huge thank you to Craig - thank goodness he was sick and happened to be home, and to the amazing team at Hillarys Medical Centre, as well as Holly and Ash, the paramedics who looked after me.

4 x 500mcg shots of adrenaline
2 antihistamine tablets
2 x intravenous steroids
2-litre IV drip

And today, like nothing happened - thankfully, I’m here, feeling completely normal.

Life can change in a matter of minutes. Check those EpiPens, check your medications, and don’t assume you’ll never need them just because you haven’t for years. I’ve learnt my lesson.

The Thought Shift Strategy

Success is not linear; it’s like one big scribble - it’s fascinating!

Reaching your goal might need tweaking - keep going and tweaking again - keep going. You might not get the goal in your timeline, don’t create drama, it might be crunchy and painful, just extend the timeline. Keep going. Does it matter if it’s Christmas or 4 months later at Easter. You still get there!

We are all scared, have self-doubt and fear - the successful ones take action anyway. So DO IT ANYWAY.

If you follow some structure:
Thoughts - Feelings - Actions
You can take away all the bulls**t/fear. Allow your fear to fuel the process. Anxiety will always be there.
DO IT ANYWAY!

Thought - I look and feel like s**t
Feeling - very sore and uncomfortable - why me?
Action - stop caring - can’t be bothered
Is that REAL - NO

Thought - I am healing
Feeling - relieved and thankful I could do this process before anything sinister
Action - resting for my instant face lift 😝

I am fortunate to have these champions in my life who consistently bring out the best in me. Their belief in my potential pushes me forward, whose support steadies me, and whose silence at the right moments gives me space to grow.

Their influence has shaped me into a stronger, more grounded and more ambitious version of myself. Still at my age.

I’m now seeing the next generation come through - strong, fit, healthy, independent - carrying traces of the methods, values and influence I’ve shared over the years. Watching those principles pass down through generations is a powerful reminder that the work we do, the standards we set and the behaviours we model truly matter. And I still feel like I have so much to offer. (Damn it - I will get this perimenopause course out!!)

Because of what my champions have poured into me, I’m able to stand in other peoples corners with purpose. I can share what I’ve learned, challenge them when needed and support them as they strive to become the best versions of themselves.

When we are shaped by strong champions, we learn how to become champions ourselves. The guidance we receive becomes the guidance we pass on. By modelling strength, balance and healthy independence we create a ripple effect - empowering others to grow, lead, and influence the next generation in turn. This is how personal development becomes collective development and how individual growth becomes legacy. My journey hasn’t finished; it’s still unfolding and I intend to keep growing so I can keep giving.

Finding balance can be understood as a metaphor for navigating life’s competing demands, responsibilities and emotions. Just as a tightrope walker must constantly adjust their position to remain upright, people must make ongoing adjustments to maintain stability and changing circumstances.

Balance does not mean standing perfectly still or giving equal attention to everything at all times; rather, it involves recognising when one aspect of life has become too dominant and making conscious efforts to restore harmony.

Whether between work or personal life, ambition and contentment, or giving to others and caring for oneself, finding balance is a dynamic process that requires awareness, flexibility, and resilience.

The metaphor reminds us that balance is not a fixed destination but a continual practice of adapting and responding to life’s moments.

Thinkfitters, you often see me working out, hitting milestones, smiling in front of the camera, and showing up strong. But today, I want to be completely real - with you and with myself.

This photo was taken while I was getting ready for a party, not long after my shoulder surgery. Exercise had become almost non-existent, I was missing my babies, and I was missing ThinkFit more than I can explain.

When I looked at myself in the mirror that night, it honestly stopped me in my tracks. It knocked me for a six.

I want you to know that I, too, struggle with bloating, body changes and what many women call the ‘menopause middle spread.’ I want you to know that I cried. I didn’t want to go to the party. I didn’t feel confident, strong or like the version of myself I was used to seeing.

While I try to inspire others and be a positive influence, behind the scenes I still have moments of overwhelm, self-doubt and meltdowns too. That’s the ebb and flow of life. That’s reality.

This photo reminds me that I’m not a superhero. I’m not 35 anymore and my body needs a different kind of care, nourishment, support and understanding than it did in the past.

But I also know this; I am not willing to sit back and let these changes define me.

I am still fighting for my strength, my health, my confidence, my energy and the best version of myself - not from a place of punishment, but from a place of self-respect and self-care.

And if I can help other women feel less alone along the way, then every hard moment has purpose.

Knowledge is power. But taking action with that knowledge? That’s where real transformation begins.
