Hotspurs Hockey Club

Hotspurs Hockey Club Perth-based club dedicated to touring and raising the standard of local hockey. There are more than 100 people named as Hotspurs.

The main objective of the Hotspurs has always been to assist the development of young hockey
players. The matches present the opportunity for Juniors to play against (and sometimes with) top
quality senior (frequently current or recent International) players and to promote hockey in general. Since commencement in mid 1961 and by early 2000, the Hotspurs have played around 1,000 at schools, clubs,

stadiums, city and country grounds and overseas venues. The majority of these games have
been in Western Australia against Schools and College teams and against representative Junior State teams. The Hotspurs first match was
at Wesley College on the afternoon of Saturday 3rd June 1961. The match had been preceded by two meetings at the Royal Kings Park Tennis Club Committee Room, at which
some essentials were sorted out -
• The name was to be THE HOTSPURS following David Anderson’s suggestion and representing Hockey Old
Timers Still Playing Uniting Rival Schools. Accordingly the Crest of Lord Percy Hotspur was adopted, as a base and captioned “While we breathe there’s Hope”. The playing uniform was to be a colourful black ... albeit with tangerine socks that appear to have been abandoned early on.

Heading to the Bunbury Junior Carnival this weekend then don't miss the Hotspurs games, yes games, versus our SW Invitational teams. The men play at 530pm, the women straight after at 715pm, with both Hotspurs teams full of current and former stars.
A massive thanks to Jason Black from the Hotspurs for organising his teams to come down, and to the players travelling from all over WA to play for the SW Invitational teams, great effort.
Word has it that former Kookaburras Jamie Dwyer and Kiel Brown will be running out for the Hotspurs at 530pm, admission is free

Vale Jack Evans
Our first communique for the 2024 season brings, regrettably, the sad news that Jack Evans, the 21st Hotspur, passed away on Good Friday.

Here is his official obituary:

EVANS John Phillip

JACK Dad passed away peacefully on Good Friday aged 100 years. Husband to Catherine Mary (Kate) Evans (deceased) married for 74 years. Brother to Bessie Andrews (deceased), Ernest Evans and father to sons Peter, Michael, John, and Anthony. You extended your love and a seat at your family table to your daughters in law, grandchildren, and great grandchildren who were fortunate enough to help celebrate your 100 years.

Always there for us and your community, you set a great example on how to live fully and respect others. A veteran of the Kings Squadron during WW2, renowned cricketer, hockey player, and lover of sport and adventure. An old Aquinian you served the federal government your entire working life. You passed away in the loving care of Mercy Village staff on a sun-drenched Friday evening and are now at peace.

Congrats to all the HA hall of famers announced late last week, especially WA's Damon Diletti, Paul Gaudoin, Kate Starre and Michelle Hager.

Five former Hockeyroos stars, four former Kookaburras champions, an umpire with an illustrious international career and one of the game’s greatest coaches have been announced as the latest inductees into the 2023 Hockey Australia Hall of Fame.
