Mullaloo Takes on the Coolangatta Gold
The Shaw and Partners Coolangatta Gold is arguably the most iconic endurance event in the surf sports calendar, challenging athletes with a test of grit, endurance and versatility across ski, swim, board and soft sand running.
Mullaloo was proudly represented at this year’s event, with Ruby Sudintas competing in the Coolangatta Sprint, a 12.5km fast paced endurance event and her dad Cam taking on the Coolangatta Gold 25.6km event.
With some help from World Champion and 2 x Iron Series winner Harriet Brown lending Ruby and Cam her ski, all that was left was to race! Ruby was competitive through all legs in the tricky conditions, finishing 12th in the hotly contested U17 female category and Cam took 3rd in the 40-49 Masters division.
Ruby credits the Mullaloo coaching team with preparing her for the race and encourages others to have a go next year in one of the many race options available from nippers to masters. “It was a grind, but at no point did I feel under prepared”, admits Ruby.
For Cam, taking part in the event was worth the wait. “I’ve wanted to do this event since I was a 16 year old kid racing for Mullaloo, so to be there almost 30 years later with Ruby is very special for me”, says Cam. “It’s a challenging event for any West Australian to take part in, so I hope to help other Mullaloo members who want to take on the Cooly Gold in the years to come!”
