Should self-defence be taught in schools? My answer is an unqualified yes.
And before anyone says it β no, this isn't about teaching kids to be aggressive. It's about teaching them the opposite.
We've somehow decided as a society that maths, English, and sport are essential life skills β but the ability to protect yourself is optional. Something you seek out privately if you're worried enough. Something that gets treated as extreme or unnecessary until the moment it isn't.
Meanwhile violent crime in Australia is rising. Home invasions, street attacks, and assaults on young people are not rare events happening to other people in other places. They're happening here, in our suburbs, to kids who were never given a single tool to deal with them.
Self-defence education in schools doesn't just teach physical skills. The research is clear β it builds confidence, reduces bullying, improves body awareness, and gives young people a sense of agency over their own safety that follows them for life.
We take road safety seriously enough to teach it. We take fire safety seriously enough to run drills. At what point do we decide that personal safety deserves the same respect?
