Meet Sue and Mark McLeay, owners of Penneshaw IGA ❤️
This December marks nine years since Sue and Mark McLeay took the reins at Penneshaw IGA.
Before moving to Kangaroo Island, they had both been regular visitors for more than 20 years - with Mark first visiting the Island when he was just 11. Prior to entering the world of supermarket retail, Sue and Mark ran a family flooring business in Adelaide while raising their three children.
After many visits to the Island, they recognised the potential of the existing IGA. When the opportunity to take over the store arose, and all three of their children were nearing the end of their schooling in Adelaide, the timing felt perfect.
When asked what they love most about living on KI, they both said: the community. They value the wide range of people they see in the shop each week and the strong connections shared across the Island.
They also acknowledged the important role tourism plays in their business; without the visitor trade, they wouldn’t be able to offer locals such a diverse range of products throughout the year. Having been both an island visitor, and now island locals, they have a deep understanding of their core customer.
You’ll often spot Sue and Mark on the shop floor - adjusting stock levels, chatting with staff and customers, and, you'll likely find Sue exercising her creativity as the shop floor's 'Chief Zhuzher'. Next time you see them, make sure you say g'day 👋
