North West Radio Yacht Club

North West Radio Yacht Club RC Yacht Racing North West Radio Yacht Club is based around the Devonport area on the North West Coast of Tasmania.

We sail primarily "A" Class Yachts (the largest class), however on club days anything with a sail will do! Our members love to have a good laugh (especially at each other) and club race days are a pretty relaxed affair. Currently we use two different venues: WInspears Dam - there are two dams here suitable in different conditions. They are located on Winspears Road, East Devonport. Robinsons Dam i

s on the Bass Hwy at Lillico (Don Hill) and is approx 250 metres east of the railway overpass. Visitors are most welcome and there is always a boat to give a go! Come out anytime, check the roster on the wall.

2025 DF65 Tasmanian state champs. Day 1..
A fleet of 15 DF65's hit the start line right on scheduled, unfortunately the early southerly was just starting to drop out and shift to the forecast Northerly, which meant the first 3 races had some unpredictable light fluky shifts, Catching everyone at some time on the wrong side of the course.
By race 4 the wind had all but disappeared and lunch was called after with the hope the sea breeze would fill in. Thankfully it did. So good racing prevailed. 14 races were completed for the day, with 8 different skippers saluting at the line. Many thanks to our RO John Pearse( Devonport Boat N Tackle ) and his helpers today , as many course buoys were needed to be shifted throughout, and thanks to Peter Haworth for his assistance all day. Lisa Blackwood has a slight overnight lead over Richard Fisher , Stu Dawes and Wayne Behrens . The score sheet has been posted for everyone to see how they went, and some photos from Peter.
See you all back tomorrow for day 2...

The first hit out for the year certainly put a few of us rusty crews to the test. A good strength breeze, but from the NE which caused directional deviations through the trees. A couple of sailers didn't seem to have many difficulties, Andy Hamilton with his RG65 flyer, and returning member Geoff Wiseman DF95 showed us up, both consistent results . The day was sailed under handicapped starts as we had different classes sailing together. Colin Hills took awhile to dial in the RG65, even changing to a DF65 for a few races, but got up to pace when brining back the RG, Nigel Cropp showed both Jack Russell and myself around the course in the DF65's, Nigel and I switched to 95's after lunch, but neither of us could catch Geoff, who showed that a year off hasn't slowed him at all. A failed rudder servo ended my day early, but overall craft and skippers all behaved well for the day.
Not only did Jack bring his big camera, he also bought along a recent Marblehead purchase which looked fast, and will be very hard to keep up with in the all classes days.
Thanks for a good day on the water fella's.
Next sail 27/2/22 @ Winspear's.
