π£ You got to be in it to win it! What a day π₯
These Westerlies have been all over the place last few days and with gusts up to 30 knots most days, it has been near impossible to make final calls on our offshore trips. On a BOM forecast of 15 to 25 knots SW... it's a 50/50 shot that it will blow closer to 15 knots or closer to 25 knots. Westerlies are tricky like that!
With today's forecast showing 15 to 20 SW increasing to 25 SW in the evening, we made a calculated decision to bring our departure time forward to 3:30am instead of 5:30am, aiming to take advantage of what was hopefully going to be more in the 15 to 18 knot bracket. After discussing the conditions with everyone booked on, some were keen and some preferred to re-schedule albeit, one group was coming down from Rainbow Beach so understandably, a 3:30am start was a bit early so they chose to re-schedule.
With the early departure today, we had the pick down in the dark and still had a little bit of moon left in the sky as well. The fish were on from the start and by 10am the wind was gusting 28 knots out of the SW, so we lost that bet with the weather man but the esky was filling up nicely π
Surface conditions were rough and choppy but with the Westerlies killing the big ocean ground swell, it was well & truly fishable on anchor and we picked away for an outstanding mixed box of fish with our bag limit of pearlies caught and a solid mix of reef fish including tuskfish, hussar, gold band snapper, moses and cod.
