Good morning, it is with enormous sadness that I announce to the WRPGC community, the loss of foundation player, and my dad, Abby Barnes. He slipped away peacefully in the early hours of Sunday morning. Dad won the Scratch prize in the inaugural 1988 event, following again in 1989. He went on to play a total of 18 times in the 31 year history of the event, his last in 2008 but would appear again at the presentation luncheon of the 30 year anniversary event in 2017, to mingle and reminisce with the players. That particular year the event was won by his Grandson, Brock, and he was extremely chuffed about that result. Whilst we arenโ€™t together to commemorate in our usual way, please take a moment to remember a man that loved his golf and loved this event. Vale dad xx

Good evening all, it is with great sadness that I inform all of the WRPGC community of the passing of one of our stalwarts, Bob Johnston. Affectionately known as "Redneck Bob", he suffered a heart attack last week and passed away in hospital yesterday. Bob was a staple at the WRPGC since 2005, a great "Aussie" character. Our thoughts are with Bob's family and many friends at this time. He will be greatly missed.๐Ÿ˜”

Hi all, sorry a bit late with this news, but it is with a heavy heart that I inform you that our Patron Ken (KJ) Goldthorp has passed away, aged 99years. If you played in the early days of the WRPGC you will know that Ken was the owner of Wedding Ring Productions before Spike and I took over, and graciously allowed us to use the business name for the event. He truly loved the day, especially catching up with old apprentices and friends. He will be sadly missed. ๐Ÿ˜”

THE END OF AN ERA:

As most of you would have been aware, last years WRPGC was cancelled due to low entry numbers and I was hoping to get it up and running again this year.

Then Covid struck!

With limited numbers allowed at venues, having a presentation afterwards would have been all but impossible.

Also having taken on a new more permanent role at Elanora Country Club, I have found myself in a position where I no longer have the time to spend organising a day like this.

So, I have made the very difficult decision to call it a day and close the door on the WRP Golf Classic. We had a great run of 31 straight years, played at different venues, and a great number of players with varying degrees of golf talent, taking part.

Along the way we made lots of new friends and sadly we lost some. But for the most part everyone played because they love golf and they loved the social aspect of the day...winning a prize, no matter what it was secondary to just having a good day out...did I mention I won it 6 times? :P

For me, winning the inaugural event in 1988 and the last in 2018, helped make the decision to finish off the event how it started...besides no room on the shield for more names ;)

Seriously, I want to thank each and every one of you for taking part, whether you played once or 20 times, you all helped to make it what it always meant to be, the best social golf day in the world and just great fun.

THANK YOU!

Signing off for the final time....

John Barnes
WRPGC President, Captain, Treasurer, Handicapper, 1988 1994 1996 2001 2005 2018 Champion.

Hi all,

Earlybird payments finished on October 14, the next payment change due in 5 days, however with the low numbers already subscribed, the very difficult decision to cancel this years event has been made.

After 31 years of the WRPGC, it is understandable that decent fields cannot be sustained every year, unfortunately it is just not viable to run the event successfully with the player numbers as they stand today.

Anyone that has already paid up will have their money refunded in full.

Thank you to all that have played in the event, whether new or an original...it's been a great ride.

The WRPGC Committee will look to get it going next year so don't write it off yet.
