Most people blame their muscles when their body feels tight, stiff or “out of alignment.”

So they stretch more.
Strengthen more.
Try new exercises.
Push through discomfort…

…but the tension keeps coming back.

In many cases, the problem isn’t the muscle at all — it’s the nervous system.

Your brain decides:
• how much tension you hold
• how safe or unstable you feel
• how much range your body will allow
• how your joints, balance and movement work together

When those signals are unclear, the body creates stiffness as protection — not because it’s “broken,” but because it’s smart.

This is why you might notice:
• one side tighter than the other
• balance feeling “off”
• weakness in certain movements
• collapsing or shifting to one side
• pain returning even after stretching

These aren’t failures.
They’re signals.

Real change happens when we look at the inputs your brain is receiving — eyes, balance, joint positioning, and movement patterns — not just the outputs.

When the inputs improve, everything feels easier.
Less effort.
Less pain.
More confidence and control in your body.

This is the heart of my approach at AVANA Studio.
Supporting your body by understanding your brain 🧠✨

✨ Introducing AVANA Studio ✨
Northern Pilates has evolved into a new chapter — one that reflects deeper work in posture, movement retraining, and nervous system support that goes beyond Pilates only.

AVANA represents strength, grounding, and transformation — the qualities I want every client to experience when they train with me.

AVANA Studio now offers both in-person and online posture assessments, neuro-based movement training, Pilates, and online programs for structure and long-term results.

Thank you for being part of this evolution.
I’m excited for what’s coming next 💛

On 19 June 2025, the PHI 51/25 Private Health Insurance Legislation Amendment Rules (No. 5) 2025 were issued, which removed the constraints on private health funds paying rebates for Pilates.
Whilst the limitation is being lifted from July 1, it is likely to be at least a few months before this is made available for our clients. We are deep in discussion with the health fund associations and some of the private health funds as to what exactly they will be covering. We will be providing regular updates on progress.

🧠✨ Left to Rest, Right to Rise ✨🔥
Ever wonder why breathing through one nostril feels different than the other?

👇Here’s the brain-based trick:
🌬️ Inhale through the LEFT nostril to activate your parasympathetic nervous system — perfect for calming anxiety, stress, or overwhelm.
🔥 Inhale through the RIGHT nostril to engage your sympathetic system — ideal when you need energy, focus, or confidence.

This isn’t just ancient wisdom — it aligns with how your brain processes sensory input and regulates your state.

🌀 Left is cool, calm, and clear — inhale here when stress is near
🔥 Right is bright, bold, and brave — when focus is what you crave

📌 Save this post for the next time you need to reset your nervous system with intention.

Movement is more than just exercise – it's medicine for the mind, body, and spirit. 🌟 The article 'Movement-Based Therapies in Rehabilitation - PMC' explores how ancient practices like yoga, Tai chi, and Pilates can significantly improve our overall health. From reducing chronic pain and depression to boosting cardiovascular health and cognitive function, movement-based therapies offer a holistic approach to wellness. A recent study even found that physical activity can reduce depression in osteoarthritis sufferers by mitigating pain (Paharia, 2024). This complements the idea that mindful movement isn't just about physical fitness but also about mental and emotional well-being. 🧘‍♂️ As Plato wisely observed, 'Lack of activity destroys the good condition of every human being, while movement and methodical physical exercise save it and preserve it.' Let's embrace this wisdom and make mindful movement a part of our daily lives. What movement practice will you try today? 💬 Share your thoughts below!

For a fourth year, We're getting involved in The Push-Up Challenge from 5-28 June 2024 and would love you to join us.

The Challenge is to complete 3,249 push-ups (or 1,625 if you choose the half target) in 24 days to raise awareness and funds for mental health. This represents the 3,249 people who died by su***de in Australia in 2022 (the most recent stats), which is why we want to push for better, and hope you will too.

Sound like too many push-ups? No worries, you can do the half target and substitute push-ups for alternative exercises, like squats and sit-ups.

It’s free to take part and there’s a sweet app where you get daily targets and mental health facts, track your progress and check out our collective stats.

We have created a Community, which is a group of Teams all participating in The Push-Up Challenge and pushing together. By joining our Community as part of a Team, we’ll be able to track our collective stats, as well as see our own personal leaderboard for Teams and individuals.

To join us, create your Team or join my Up Downers through our Community page:

https://www.thepushupchallenge.com.au/fundraisers/moveforyourhealth

We hope you and your crew can join us in the push for better mental health!
