Rudi & Cole racing to the line in the USA nationals would of been great to watch

The NWSRA was saddened to learn of the recent passing of longtime racer and driver, Jon Cole. A moment of silence took place prior to the start of last weekend's Lake Elsinore Water Ski Races. Jon was a seven-time National Water Ski Racing Champion, the 1996 Catalina Water Ski Race record holder for men over 45, and the Australia Bridge to Bridge water ski race record holder for men over 50. John lived life to the fullest, with a competitive spirit that was unmatched. Here’s a from the January/February 2007 issue of The Water Skier magazine, capturing Jon’s “retirement race” at the 2006 Nordic Boats US Open Water Ski Racing National Championships in San Diego, Calif.

🤔Why the Same Prop Acts Completely Different on Different Boats

(Even with the same motor)

We hear this all the time:

“This prop runs amazing on my buddy’s boat… why does it suck on mine?”
Same engine.
Same horsepower.
Same prop.

Totally different results.

Here’s why — in real world terms, not textbook bu****it.

THE HULL IS THE BOSS

The prop doesn’t just push the boat, it works with the hull. Every hull carries weight differently, lifts differently, breaks water differently, releases water differently..

A prop that works great on a light, sharp-pad hull might feel dead on a heavier, wider hull that carries more load.

Same engine different water flow.

📐 Running Height Changes Everything

Two boats with the same motor almost never run the engine at the same parameters. Jackplate height, setback, transom angle, etc. All of that changes how clean the water is when it hits the prop.

Dirty water = prop slip
Clean water = prop bite

That’s why a prop can feel snappy on one boat & lazy on another.

⚖️ Weight & Balance Matter More Than People Think

Batteries.
Power poles.
Fuel load.
Electronics.
Passenger weight.

Move weight just a few inches and the prop does a totally different job. This is something no one ever considers. 20lbs in the wrong spot will make or break your boat. Some hulls need stern lift, some need bow lift.

Run the wrong prop for the hull’s balance and you’ll fight it forever.

🔧 The Motor Tune & RPM Window

Props are designed to work best in a specific RPM range. And your engine makes its specified horsepower within that RPM Window also.

If one boat can reach that RPM, pulls through midrange clean, and the other can’t…

Same prop, different outcome.

That’s why setup + tuning matters just as much as the prop itself.

There is no such thing as a “one size fits all” prop.

A prop that’s perfect on Hull A can be completely wrong on hull B.

EVEN WITH IDENTICAL ENGINES & LOADS

This is just the simplest way of breaking this down for yall. It goes much much deeper and we still learn more and more every day about props even though we do this for a living.
