GSCC Supervets race report - 4 March 2026
Three times to Blackgate Road and return. 38km (race report kindly provided by David O’Dwyer. Photos & additional words kindly provided by Sir Marcus Coppock of Paraparap (SV MoC)).
Yesterday, 17 riders had entered the out and back Blackgate Road three times race with 16 starting due to a rider having a mechanical before he was called to the starting line. Thanks to Paul Bird the commissaire, Brian Long the starter and time keeper along with Richard Buckwell, Murray Riggs and James Burzacott for their assistance in keeping both riders and drivers safe.
Sunny with a light wind greeted the Super Vet riders for race 3 of the 2026 road season. The out and back 3 lap course, appeared on paper to suit the out marker due to the good weather.
The first group to start was Terry Collie and Harold Bentley on 20 minutes. They both started well and were setting a solid pace. Up the hill at the start of the second lap Harold pull away and set himself the big challenge of holding off the chases for 2 laps on his own.
Next to start were the 12-minute group of Tina and Barry. By the end of their first lap, they had pull back time on Terry and Harold. The next group on 9 minutes of Allan McKay and Brian Marks were riding very well together and at the end of the second lap, looked like possible winners.
The 6-minute group started fast with Eugene, Laurie and Richard all working well together. By the start of the last lap the 6-minute group were closing in fast on the now combined 9 and 12-minute groups.
The second scratch group of Dave Spence, Tony Peach, Garry Day, David Ballie and Les were working well together from the start and were rapidly closing the gap across the whole race. They were closely followed by the lone scratchmen Anthony Seipolt who had done a great job to reduce the time gap and have fastest time under control.
At the last turn it was Harold Bentley with a small lead over the combined 9 and 12-minute group. The 6-minute group were about 40 seconds behind them with the 2-minute group about 1 minute behind the 6-minute group. With 4k to go Harold was caught after a great effort on his own. At 3k to go the 6-minute group caught the leaders after Laurie, Eugene and Richard put in several hard turns to bridge the gap. Allan McKay was still riding strong and started to put the other riders under pressure coming up to the finish. Laurie went to the front with 500 metres to go and ramped the pace up. Allan McKay was able to stay with him. At 300 metres Allan made a strong and decisive move off the front with Dave O’Dwyer and Eugene on his wheel. This put Dave in the box seat and at 200 to go hit the front, but Allan was able to stay with Dave and pushed him all the way to the line for a narrow win. Allan McKay 2nd, Eugene 3rd, Tina 4th Barry Campbell 5th and a great job by Harold Bentley to finish 6th.
The second scratch group finished about 20 second behind the winner with Garry Day taking the bunch sprint. They were closely followed by fastest time winner Anthony Seipolt in a time of 1.08:09
It was good to see riders from 4 different groups in the top 6. Well, done to all the riders and officials for making it a good and safe race.
