Easing Depressive Symptoms Naturally: What Science Says About Mind–Body Exercises
Feeling emotionally low or weighed down? Clinical research shows that traditional mind-body practices like Tai Chi and Qigong significantly reduce depressive symptoms while lowering systemic inflammation in the body.
A 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis published on PubMed Central looked at 30 randomized controlled trials involving traditional Chinese mind-body exercises, including Tai Chi, Qigong, Baduanjin, and other related practices.
The researchers found a significant reduction in depressive symptoms among participants who practiced these exercises compared with control groups.
What makes this especially interesting is that these practices bring together movement, breathing, attention, and relaxation. Rather than focusing only on physical fitness, they encourage us to slow down, become more aware of the body, and reconnect with the breath.
The findings add to growing interest in gentle mind-body practices as a complementary way to support emotional well-being and healthy aging.
Sometimes wellness begins with something as simple as slowing down, taking a breath, and moving with intention.
