The ODFRA Committee would like to bring to your attention a growing concern that has been raised by our referees regarding the level of swearing and inappropriate language being used during matches, both on the field of play and from technical areas.
Our referees have reported an increase in excessive swearing from players and team officials. While we understand that football is a passionate and emotional game, the level of language being used is becoming unacceptable.
We respectfully ask that all clubs communicate with their players, coaches, and team officials to reinforce expectations around appropriate behaviour and language during matches. Referees should not be expected to hear or tolerate excessive swearing in what is, for them, their workplace environment.
To support this expectation, ODFRA will be advising referees that where swearing is considered excessive or inappropriate, they should take appropriate action, including issuing warnings and disciplinary sanctions where required under the Laws of the Game.
We believe that reducing this behaviour will contribute to a more respectful and enjoyable environment for everyone involved in football.
We appreciate your support in addressing this matter and ask that this information be circulated to all affiliated teams.
