🔪 Knife Myth Monday

❌ Myth: "Damascus steel is always better than regular steel."

Those beautiful patterns definitely catch your eye, but Damascus doesn't automatically mean a knife will perform better! 👀

Modern Damascus is typically created by layering and forge-welding different steels together, producing the distinctive patterns we associate with Damascus blades.

But just like any knife, its actual performance depends on things like the steels used, heat treatment, blade geometry and overall construction.

A quality Damascus blade can absolutely be an excellent performer — but the pattern alone isn't a guarantee of better edge retention, toughness or sharpness.

Sometimes it's about performance. Sometimes it's about craftsmanship. And sometimes... you just want the pretty one. 😂🔪

This week we're taking a look at AEB-L — a stainless steel that's earned a great reputation among knife makers and users alike.

Originally developed for razor blades, AEB-L has a very fine carbide structure that allows it to take an incredibly keen edge while maintaining excellent toughness.

Rather than focusing purely on maximum edge retention, AEB-L offers a great balance of sharpness, toughness, corrosion resistance and ease of maintenance.

🔪 Knife Myth Monday

❌ Myth: "Serrated knives never need sharpening."

Those little teeth might keep cutting for a long time, but serrated blades aren't magically maintenance-free! 👀

Serrations are great at biting into tougher or fibrous materials like rope, cardboard and webbing, and they can often remain useful even as the edge begins to dull.

But just like a plain edge, those serrations will eventually lose their sharpness with enough use.

The difference is in how they're maintained. Serrated blades generally need a smaller sharpening rod or a sharpening system designed to work with the individual serrations rather than being sharpened exactly like a standard straight edge.

🔪 So while they might go a long time between touch-ups, serrated knives still need a little love eventually!
