Scottish Highland Dance is a traditional, competitive style of solo dance originating from Scottish Highlands in the 19th century. It is a recognised Sport in Scotland where competitions take place worldwide including the UK, Europe, USA, Canada, South Africa and Australia. Perth Academy of Highland Dance classes are taught by an experienced and passionate highland dancer who has performed and com

peted in the sport for over 20 years in Australia and overseas and has been a member of the renowned OzScot Australia and Edinburgh Military Tattoo dance teams. Dancers at the Perth Academy of Highland Dance are provided with opportunities to compete locally and across Australia as well as opportunities to perform across WA at multi-cultural events celebrating the unique style, culture and precision of Scottish Highland Dance. Lessons focus on creating a balance between technical work, choreography, fitness, fostering discipline and resilience as well as having fun in a supportive and nurturing environment. Group and private classes are held in North Perth and Mount Hawthorn as well as in Northam. Perth Academy of Highland Dance welcomes and encourages dancers from ages 4 years to adult and is open to all new enquiries.

Tomorrow we gather at the Tivoli Theatre for the Grace Watson Memorial Competition, a special event that honours the memory and legacy of an exceptional Highland dancer and remarkable person.

Grace Watson was a two-time Grand Australasian Champion, winning the prestigious Open Championship in 1992 and again in 1998. These titles were among her proudest achievements, earned through unwavering dedication, determination, and a deep love for Highland dancing.

Throughout her competitive career, Grace was known not only for her outstanding success but also for her sportsmanship, humility, and commitment to excellence. She won numerous major championships, including the Champion of Champions Championship of Australia. In 1997, Grace achieved 5th place overall in the Adult World Highland Dancing Championship in Scotland - a result celebrated by all who knew and supported her.

As a student, Grace was the embodiment of hard work and perseverance, always striving to perfect every movement. These same qualities shone through during her courageous battle with cancer. Sadly, Grace passed away in August 2014 at the age of 43.

Living in Perth with her husband Paul, Grace remained actively involved in the Highland dancing community as a teacher member of the Western Australian Metropolitan Regional Committee of Highland Dancing Inc.

The Grace Watson Memorial Competition was first held in November 2014, with proceeds supporting cancer research and awareness. Today, it continues to celebrate Grace's enduring contribution to Highland dancing and the lasting impact she made on so many lives.

As dancers take to the stage tomorrow, we remember Grace - not only as a champion dancer, but as a beautiful person whose legacy continues to inspire generations of Highland dancers.
