Perth Soccer Club is the State’s most successful football club. Since our formation in 1948, we have been crowned champions of Western Australia on 26 occasions. Our success has been built on our values of integrity, respect, ambition, effort, teamwork and community. These are the values that were instilled in us by our founders – a group of Italian migrants from the WA Italian Club – and still ho
ld true today. Our founders, many of who were in a new country to build a new life, used football to socialise and become part of the local community. They named the club Azzurri, which still remains the nickname of Perth SC today – pointing to our Italian migrant heritage. Perth Azzurri was not only highly successful on the pitch – winning an abundance of trophies and developing thousands of talented players – it became part of the social and cultural fabric of the community. Many friendships, relationships, marriages and business partnerships formed and blossomed at Perth Azzurri, and lifelong bonds with the club were passed on to the next generation. The children, grandchildren and great grandchildren of some of our founding members are still active participants in our club today. In 1987, Perth Azzurri, along with traditional rival East Fremantle Tricolore and Balcatta Etna, decided to unite the Italian footballing community in a bid to form a stronger and united group with the intention to join the National Soccer league. This led to the amalgamation of the three clubs and the establishment of Perth Italia. Perth Italia quickly proved itself as a force in local football, winning five consecutive premierships between 1989 and 1993. Entry into the National Soccer League never eventuated and both Balcatta Etna (1991) and East Fremantle Tricolore (2004) left the merged club. In 1995, the club dropped the “Italia” name to broaden our appeal in the community. We became known as Perth Soccer Club – as we are still known today. The club logo was redesigned in 2013 to reflect our Azzurri heritage, with the club’s colours also returning to the sky blue tone to honour our founding fathers. While proud of our Italian heritage, the club has opened its doors to the broader community. We have players from various ethnic, religious and cultural backgrounds playing at Perth SC and have also hosted other sports such as rugby league and gridiron at Dorrien Gardens. In 2020, several years after the reintroduction of junior girls teams at the club, Perth SC was selected to become part of the inaugural NPLWA Women’s League – the top tier of women’s football in WA. Our young girls now have something to strive for when doing the hard work in the junior ranks – to represent Perth SC at senior level in the State’s best women’s football competition. Perth SC has produced a number of players who have gone on to represent Australian national teams at both youth and senior levels and become professional footballers and international players in their own right. More importantly, Perth SC has played a key development role in thousands of young men and women that have become active and positive contributors in our local community. Perth SC has evolved over more than 70 years, but we remain true to our values and our purpose to make our members better players and better people. This is why we will continue to create lifelong members and supporters of our club, who will pass on their love and passion for Perth SC to the next generation.
