Flashback to when I ran a community S&C programme for indigenous youth on North Stradbroke Island for about a year.

Fitness was the hook. Giving young men better choices and something positive to show up for was the real point.

Watched some of those young men quietly change over the course of that year. Showed up more. Carried themselves differently.

Still one of the better things I’ve done with a coaching role.

To hit harder, train to be faster.

Force is mass times acceleration. You can’t grow your fist or your shin. The only variable you can change is how fast you move them. A faster strike equals more force. More force equals more damage.

There are different approaches to improving the power of a strike, from a S&C standpoint, I prefer building power. You increase power through improved strength and speed. I favour speed, landing first consistently is statistically a more successful approach than landing a haymaker once.

Everything we do in S&C for striking specifically is built around developing speed in the planes of motion that matter in fighting.

Speed kills.

Watched a couple of guys from Base fight last weekend.

Reminded me of this MMA fight from ten years ago. Warm-up and walk out was a blur. Didn’t really switch on until the first punches were thrown. I was so excited and nervous.

Turns out that feeling doesn’t go away. You just get better at working with it.

Good to see the guys step up.

This was my first fight coaching a woman, & it was the most brutal fight one of my guys has been in.

HUGE respect to Tyleah’s opponent & team from . Exceptional boxing from Charmaine.
Both girls showed tremendous heart & toughness.

First fights are ALWAYS messy, but usually you see someone start to get exposed as underprepared. Not this fight.

Both Charmaine & came to win & were ready for a war. The fight was razor close.

Tyleah stuck to the game plan & simply refused to take a backwards step. I believe this is what won her the fight.

Congratulations both girls, you did yourselves proud.

Thank you to & for the opportunity & learning experience. Excited to see the girls develop further & possibly run it back. I don’t think anyone in that stadium would object to seeing it again.

🤫 “Resentment & complaint are appropriate neither for oneself nor for others” - Miyamoto Musashi

📋 Resilience is a quality in people that seems to be harder and harder to find these days. We all have setbacks in life, hurdles, detours. Tyleah’s knack to use these moments in her life as opportunities to learn and grow from, rather than stay down and wilt has set her up to deal with 4 fight camps back to back with no fight due to unfortunate pull-out situations.

🥊 This Sunday discipline and determination is rewarded as she finally jumps the ropes for her first Muay Thai fight. She shows more work ethic, integrity, courage and personal responsibility than too many people my own age, male or female, and she’s only 19. It’s been a real pleasure being a part of her journey and I’m so proud of who she is and who she’s becoming.
