For most of you, the studio closed a week ago. But I’ve had lots of marketplace pick ups, cleaning and organising to do this week.
But after getting the all clear from the landlord, I packed up the last of the studio today.
I walked through the empty space, and remembered how excited I was to fit the place out. I remembered all of you who’ve walked through the doors. Especially those who stayed for a long time. Most of you, right up until the end. The friendships that were built. The things that you achieved. How amazing our little community has been.
I must admit, I hesitated when locking the doors for the last time.
And then cried on my way home.
This felt like the right decision, but that doesn’t mean it was easy, either.
This business, leading this community, being a trainer, was such a big part of my life. Part of my identity.
But I know in my heart that it’s time to let go. To evolve. To allow myself the next stage of growth.

I want to say thank you all of my wonderful clients.
You’ve spoilt me with love, understanding and gifts. And of course, to Dave, Val and Charlie - the trainers who’ve taught alongside me for the longest/made the biggest impact, and helped so many see that there’s so much more to fitness than our bodies.
That movement can be fun. That challenges can be enjoyable.
Thank you Dave, Val & Charlie. You’ve made a difference. You’ve changed lives, and I’m so damn grateful to you all.

This is the second year that we've been running our women's workshop for the community in Adelaide. What we teach is how to deal with the worst-case scenario, when the awareness, avoidance and de-escalation have failed, and it all turns physical.

Today is White Ribbon Day.

This White Ribbon Day we're asking, 'How Can Men Make Change?'
Because violence against women is not just a women's issue. We need men to own it, to champion it, to take action, and to call it out. A lot of men don't realise how much power they can shift in a conversation just by casually telling their friends "that's not right" when someone says something bigoted.

Today, we can all choose to take the pledge: "I swear to never commit, excuse or remain silent about violence against women"

Along with this, there are organisations, such as The Zahra Foundation, who support women impacted by domestic abuse by providing free programs, services, education and grants to help those affected by domestic abuse to build a life that is free from poverty and abuse.

In March The Zahra Foundation will have their next ‘The Next Steps’ event; a 4km walk or run from Grange to Henley, to raise funds and awareness.

Self Defence Workshop at Box it Out

Charlie from Mindset Self Defence and Close Quarters Combat will be running a crazy affordable yet comprehensive Women's Only Self Defence workshop on Sat July 27th & Sun July 28th.

The aim is that you will:
Learn how to block an attack confidently.
Learn how to defend yourself against slaps, punches, pushes & grabs.
Learn to defend yourself against headlocks, hair grabbing, and wrist grabs.
Learn how to defend yourself against chokeholds, and bear hugs.
Learn how to defend yourself on the ground.Learn effective r**e defence techniques.
Learn how to use your hands, legs, knees & elbows as weapons.
Learn to defend yourself against many other types of attacks with confidence.

Dave's top 3 tips for boxing and having the best class 🥊 ⬇️

🥊 BOXING

1️⃣ Listen to your body and let it express itself in flow.
2️⃣ The bag doesn't care if you get a combo wrong. (and neither do I as long as the technique is sound).
3️⃣ Finally, try not to let your fun be reliant upon your competency.

Next, let's talk about tips for having the best class.

✅ Come with realistic expectations of yourself as directed by mood, experience, capabilities, and energy levels.
✅ Use that expectation to have an individual goal for the session. (could be mindfulness, social, focus on improving a mechanic or skill, etc. it'll generally be able to fit in with whatever session plan your coach has already planned).
✅ Consistency trumps output. 4 classes a week when you half-ass two of them, is still better than 2 classes a week. And over the course of a year, the changes you'll see really couldn't care less about that one session where you did an extra pushup. but they will care about the 10 or so sessions you didn't do because you weren't feeling up to peak performance.

P.S. Listening to your body is still key, if you need a full rest, take a full rest. but. often habits can be harder to pick back up than a kettlebell, and the goal should *always* be learning to love moving and using your body. Some of these skills take time. Be gentle and kind to yourself, but remember that small steps make marathons.
