The BEST things about getting your child into community sport like football, tennis or basketball are the friendships, enjoyment and the sense of achievement that comes with it. It can be life changing 😊

But for children with a neurodiverse background, we want to make sure that they have the confidence before we commit to a full season or team.

❌ What we DONT want to do is put them straight into “the deep end” which can cause a loss interest, excessive fatigue or early drop out.

✅ What we DO want is a base level motor skills that match the demands of a sport in a team environment. So that when they do join it’s sustainable and fun.

This year we have worked a lot with OTs who focus on fine motor skills, independent daily living skills, and emotional regulation. My role as an Exercise Physiologist is to build and support the gross motor capacity underneath it all.
We focus on building: ✅ Smooth coordinated movement, & body awareness ✅ Postural stamina & strength ✅ & the ability to perform basic movement patterns well.

Without a basic level of movement competency it’s pretty hard to participate in meaningful activities to the best of your ability. So we cover this area of therapy, and make sure it doesn’t get missed! Children diagnosed with low tone, EDS or complex movement challenges, deserve a supportive environment to develop these skills. Our scope of practice as EPs lends its self well to filling this gap.

Working in tandem with your treating OT (& catching up regularly!) works well as we can cover a broader base of needs. We support goals together like playground & social confidence, actually enjoying sports, motivation for school, learning to ride a bike, and keeping up with their friends.

We are currently building a nice little collaborative network of health professionals who value working side by side. The kids deserve it. Thanks Johnny for the catch up, always good fun 😄 Footpoint Podiatry Noosa 👣

Who knew therapy could look this fun? 🤸‍♀️ 🌈

The .original are a clinic favourite, helping kids jump, balance, climb and create their own movement adventures while developing coordination, strength and motor skills.

Exercise Physiology management can be a powerful tool for managing symptoms of ADHD & promoting a state of calm and sustained focus. Working in a clinical environment, we encourage choice (this empowers effort & autonomy) and coach children to breathe intentionally and slowly prior to activity (calm the systems & clear decision making). Some of the finer details can have the most profound impact 😊

We work with children living with ASD. Exercise Physiologists can play a huge role in developing motor skills and confidence for school, sport and everyday life. Approximately 1 in 40 Australians are diagnosed with ASD under the age of 25.

Meeting new people, new routines and new places can be overwhelming so leading with “trust” and building familiarity within the therapy environment is really important. Secondly, engaging with interests and positive re-enforcemnt of effort can be really powerful for driving motivation. Through games, movement, drills and working together we can create some really positive outcomes 😊
