The sollife Collaborator Series continues with Santa Cruz mega-shredda Burns
I'd been watching Shaun from afar for many years, tearing apart Steamer Lane and enjoying success on the World Surf League stage, before finally approaching him about collaborating on some boards around four years ago.
To be honest, I was a bit intimidated when we first met up and he showed me his board room. But it turned out to be the perfect place to start. We went through different boards, discussing what he liked and didn't like about each one, giving me a solid foundation to work from.
Since then, we've connected on some gems and developed a great surfer/shaper relationship. I only wish we'd started working together earlier!
These days Shaun is a proud family man and does great work with The Waves as part of the Santa Cruz World Surfing Reserve, while still surfing professionally for 'Neill
Good man, great surfer, and someone I'm stoked to work with and proud to call a friend.
Surfing is for life. 🤙

A cool blast from the past… 🤙
My friend Hunter, a young shaper at T&C in Hawaii, sent me this photo recently and it brought back some great memories.
This shot was taken in Hawaii in 2003 and features World Surf League 2000 World Champion Sunny Garcia after the Aussie leg of the tour. During that trip, we worked together on this and several other boards. This particular board i shaped for Sunny at Burleigh Heads, Australia, and he went on to compete at Bells on it.
What I remember most though was the first session on this board. We surfed pumping Burleigh together and I was pretty nervous waiting to see how it would go. That feeling didn't last long. Several times down the point I saw Sunny's fins blasting out the back of the wave, sending tons of spray, and knew we'd hit the mark. He was surfing incredibly well.
As a bigger, super powerful surfer, Sunny presented an enjoyable design challenge. Building boards that could harness that strength while still allowing him to surf freely, and receiving his feedback along the way, helped me continue to refine and evolve my designs.
More than 30 years into shaping, memories like these still mean a lot. Surfing has given me some incredible experiences, friendships and shared stoke.
Surfing is for life. 🌊🤙
